I finally wired up my winch last night, and I am about 90% sure I did a pretty good job. I was just kinda wondering how everyone has there winches wired.
I went ahead and replaced the old top post ACDelco with an Optima red top, that has male top posts and female side posts. I used 2ga cables, I wired the ground directly to the battery, and I used a warn quick disconnect on the positive! I am also a li'l bummed cuz my warn has some sheared gears, meaning I went ahead and bought my dad's Ramsey 8000 and will be using that junk till I can afford a 10k winch. I guess I will have to snatch block every time I winch!

An 8K is probably more than adequate unless you're chassis deep in thick mud and have to break suction to extract it. The old "junk" ramsey 8K's are one of the longest lasting beater winches out there. After all- it still works and the Warn spewed gears...
I hope you didn't wire the winch to the side posts... they are not designed to meet the current draw of a winch.

uh...oh..... even if you put the screw in posts on it, that allow you to do clamps? I may have to go home and fix that tonight! I am going to be doing a lot of creek driving this weekend!

That is a really good point! The Warn was almost brand new, and the Ramsey is close to 5yrs old...... point proven! I guess I just have a chip on my shoulder because of my last experience with a ramsey!

I have an 8 year old Ramsey on a beater truck- I abuse and neglect the winch and it always works.
Optima warns against using the side posts for huge current draw (like a winch). The winch will draw more power than the original vehicle would ever pull. I think they suggest putting the vehicle cables on the side terminals and the winch on the top terminals. I, of course, wouldn't recommend an Optima at all considering their failure rate.

JC, sure you got enough wire to that winch. By the time the power gets to the winch it would have forgotten what it was going there for.
How do you get to the solenoids if they play up? |

DFW, is your warn less than 1 year old? If so, its still under warranty. Get it fixed and then sell it.
Otherwise you can probably sell some parts off of it. Is the motor still good? What model winch is it? I destroyed my motor in my warn so I am in the market for some used-but-not-terribly abused parts. |

Did you consider a deep-cycle (yellow or blue top) over the red top? Winching can drain a battery quick and deep cycles are meant to handle the charge/drain 'cycle'.
But you have a winch and I don't so you still win ![]() AndrewT |

Well, the snorkel hose comes off easy and the solenoid box is only held down by 2 screws I think. anything else is cake. I packed that thing with dielectric grease though.

I will check on everything today, to see what exactly is wrong with the winch! I would gladly part it out, if someone needs the parts! I will let you know what I find out. As far as waranty goes, I bought the winch used and the guy I bought it from never sent off for the factory waranty.... I called a local 4wl drive shop and they told me fat chance on getting warn to stand behind that winch without the paper work!
