I have been searching (to no avail) for some method to store my gas cans outside my Disco (for obvious reasons I hope). On my latest trip down south to Baja my carb legal crap Blitz jerry cans leaked all over the place making for a less than pleasant experience. My neighbor's Rubicon has a rather handy swing away tire carrier with a jerry can mounted on each side. Is there a "universal" variety of this out there that I can bolt to my bumper? Or a jerry can holder that will mount to the spare tire mount and hold the cans on each side of the spare? i.e. [](o)[]
I no longer have access to a welder so I unfortunately cannot fab something myself. |

Do you have a steel rear bumper?
I use military cans and carry them inside- never smelled 'em.

I use the military cans as well, and keep them inside the truck (even tho I have a carrier on the rear door, but I cannot lock the cans, and sick of people stealing the gas...) Canadian Tire actually cares a direct copy of the military cans by special order, they are red, and evn have a nice spout with them... a quick coat of miltiary green and for half the price, you have a new can.....

I have a steel bumper (manufacturer's name escapes me) and I would love to carry the cans on it. If I had the military style can I'm sure it wouldn't bother me so much; however I have the CA legal carb style cans that leak like crazy. Besides the leaking it is just plain safer to store the gasoline OUTSIDE the passenger compartment, for me and my dog.

Are you refering to something like this? http://offroadrecovery.com/product/G81
![]() I don't want to push the weight of the jerry can too far out behind the spare otherwise I risk torquing the rear door off its hinges. I'm envisioning something like [can](tire)[can]. |

You should be able to adapt one of the Jeep Wrangler carriers- check Quadratech... I think that's where I got the one I used to have.
Gas cans inside are safer than outside, BTW. Outside, they can be crushed in a simple rear-end accident and dump fuel, static electricity is HUGE on the outside of a moving car too. But if that's what you gotta do, that's what you gotta do. ![]()

yep that's the one. I don't really like how it looks but it's an alternative. I guess the weight is lighter than a hi lift so it's gonna be less strain on the hinges. I've never seen jerry mount like the one you want.
or how about a roof rack?

Quadratech might be the way to go. I think this may work: http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_00.htm with http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_05.htm

I full Jerry can weighs about 43-45 pounds...
I like that Tomken setup shown- it would cover my bumper lamps, but all those functions can be moved to the upper lamp housings... hmmm. I have a swing-away super heavy duty carrier for a TJ/YJ etc that is brand new, but it weighs WAY too much to put on the Disco. That Tomken one seems much lighter in construction.
