Question Manual Winch

I was browsing through Petersen's 4 Wheeler Magazine again today, and saw something that caught my attention: Power Puller. A manual winch like a floor jack, or a really over sized ratchet strap using 5/16th's cable, or like a beefed up comalong. I dunno seemed pretty cool; has a tow rating of 4 tons drag.

The winch is made by a company out of Newark, OH, called Wyeth-Scott.

Here's a pic of the thing, what y'all think of this? If-ish? Gonna break before it even gets used?

LOL yeah I was thinking that.

The price on this thing is about $140, so I guess you get what you payed for. LOL

So this thing is probably used for getting cars/trucks onto trailers, or what?

About the winch...yup....save your cash for a real winch....can pickup a good Superwinch EP9.0 for ~$550.

If you wanted to get an even better tool that can also winch you, you could pick yourself up a HiLift. Its still manual and even more of a pain for winching, but it will do other stuff that the manual winch wont.

If you need a hand winch just use a 60" high lift with accessories and a some high grade chain, a tree strap and maybe a tow strap (not so strechable). I got burried once while hunting and used the high lift. First I jacked up the truck out of the ruts and put as much wood/dirt whatever I could find underneath the tires. I then dug out the front diff as much as possible. I had jate rings so I tied to one with a tow strap and a Dshackel then to the high lift. I then used a second strap to tie to the jack and then to the tree strap. Then jack away as tight as you can get and then drive as far as you can go, rerig and repeat. I looped the strap between jate rings to take up distance. This is wear a STRONG chain would have been easier to rerig. High lift makes a fitting that goes on the jack hook that a chain ties right into. Anyway, I had to rerig several times but after about 2 hours I was heading home. Tired, outta smokes, and no game to take home, but at least I was going home!!! My Dad offered to buy a winch after seeing me work so hard. I waited and two years later bought my own winch/bumper. If you are goinmg to fo for a hand winch, you are better off with something like this.

http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/handwinch.htm

There are a number of similar brands around.

The advantages of a hand winch is that you can winch your car in any direction at the front or rear. They do not need a winch bar or other mounting equipment. They will work under water and without the motor running and batteries flat.

The disadvantage is that they can be hard work. When it is mounted to a tree, it is often on uneven ground and can be difficult to stand and winch. You would not want to winch huge distances or be in a hurry.

Yeah, that is a good advantage, but I don't mind the hard work, cause wheelin' ain't fun til' you get stuck which requires work. Equals out right there.

But does this hand winch have the capacity to pull me out of rut? Probably want to get the Skylift jack to go with it then huh?

I still wanna keep options available to what will benefit me without leaving me with a discharged battery and such.

I had the one I listed for my Rangie before I started the more difficult stuff. I did not have any problem recovering the Rangie with it if you have two people. One to drive the car and one to winch. If you were by yourself, you would most likely have to use a snatch block if you have to pull it dead.

OK sorry for not being informed, but what is a snatch block? LOL Never heard the term before.

And let's say I am by myself, can using a Skylift jack and some wood or whatever nudged under the wheels do the trick in getting it out using that hand winch?

A snatch block is a pully that you connect to the thing you are trying to move and then bring the cable back to the winch. It doubles the pulling power of the winch or halves the effort.

You can see pictures of the various pieces of recovery gear here:

http://www.beaver.com.au/news20.htm
OR
http://www.tjmproducts.com.au/ox_recovery.html
And this one has a picture of a snatch block in use in the opening page and explains its use if you click on the snatch block heading
http://www.arb.com.au/recovery_equipment.htm

If you have a winch, you should have the minimum of a tree protector, snatch block, snatch strap, and some rated shackles. Other good stuff is a winch extension strap and the bag to go over the cable when winching.

I haven't made the brushguard/winch investment yet but even for assisting a winch or as a winch itself i've found this to be useful. I keep this one in my Disco at all times http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...6970_7743_7743

its a good workout but i've gotten myself out of plenty of stuff with it, but you have to make sure you have a couple of tow straps as the actual pull distance is rather short. you can use it with on person i usually load the puller up then get in and move the vehicle then load the puller then ...... you get the point its not fast but it will get you out!!!
