Default New accessory for the lone wheeler...

It's happened several times before where I've gotten myself stuck in ways where I cant use my winch to get myself out of a situation and the only other alternative is hours and hours of digging. Because I wheel alone a lot, I decided to invest in an M6000 Portable winch for my rear hitch (if you're wondering "why didnt you just get lockers or something?"...i got this badboy for MUCH cheaper than a detroit!)

I'll be keepin it in a pelican case to avoid having it rolling around the cargo area. The case will then be strapped down to the cargo floor using D-rings im waiting on.

I'll be installing my light bar/lights and running the wires for the winch tonight.

There is no support in the rear floor to withstand a winch pulling. You would need 3/16" plating and a good spot to anchor it too.

Mike, when the winch is in use, it will be mounted to the hitch which is mounted to the frame. What I was talking about in regards to the cargo floor was strapping the pelican case containing the winch (when its not in use) down to the floor so it doesn't slide or jump around.

Great idea Binary. I wheel alone off road often that why I have lockers front and rear, however I do carry a Tirfor hand winch. It is hard work and slow doing an extraction but it teaches you to approach or avoid situations that may require having to use it.

Amen to that...but every now and then I dont think things all the way through and will end up in a muddy situation...hehe...good times though. I've had to use my Hi-Lift as a hand winch 4 times, I think. Definately not a good time. Specially for me being 5'4" & 120lbs. I can't produce the same amount of leverage on the Hi-Lift's handle a biggger guy would.

Next step would be to get some Jate rings for the rear in order to hook up to for double line pulls.

Shoot, I wish I had a winch period, let alone another one for the rear. Good idea with the hitch idea, makes sense.

A winch will get you out of or into a lot more places than a locker.

my free option to getting out of sticky situations: I never wheel alone.

i have nothing against it, but I also dont have a winch (front or rear), lockers, or any goodies like that.

i tried to get a tree to pull me out with my tow rope once, but for some reason it wouldnt cooperate

Well, while wheelin in groups is always fun and safe, there's an added rush factor and sense of adventure when I go out alone. Not to mention I can stay out as long as I want (wheelin alone at night in the middle of south fla swamps...that'll put some hair on your chest...only did that once and once was all it took to tell me that it's no place to be in the middle of the night) and when alone, you train yourself to pick the right lines, you develope your spidy sense, and you learn A LOT! I've done it enough to know what I and my truck are and aren't capable of. Its good times.

How is that winch going to save you when your diff breaks. Oh, and it IS going to happen if you keep wheeling with stock diff's.

I imagined a female blow up passenger.

I understand the winch wont save me in that situation. And I WILL be changing my diffs soon.

Ben, it was a special deal I came across and couldnt pass it up. I'm replacing my cable on my front mounted winch to rope, so I'll have 100' of spare cable to add to the 50' of the portable.

Thor...lol

Keep in mind guys..when I go out alone, im not on a suicide mission, I stick to the somewhat beaten path and dont traverse over anything I know my truck cant take...but it never hurt to have a plan B on a bad judgement call.
