I can certainly picture one of those sitting in the front seat with Binary. Also, three others in the back.

Bwana, Hank occassionally has a point. If you are going into places that justify a front and rear winch, you are going into places where you will cook your diffs.

The problem with temporary mounted winches is mounting them when your stuck. Wading into a mud hole trying to open the rear door without the car filling with mud and then trying to find the receiver and connect everything up. But it is better than not getting out at all.

If you get stuck with lockers, you need a winch. You're alone. You're screwed. If you break a diff, the winch can get you out. You're only slowed down. I've been in both situations. I'd take a winch first anyday. Recovery equipment is way more important than anything else when you're by yourself.

Look at it like this: If you have a winch, be sure and take a pair of boots. If you have no winch, take food and shelter.

Nice idea, it's quite common over here.

Mate of mine did something similar on his 90 but he's also made brackets so he can mount the winch on the side of the vehicle (sill/rock sliders) so if need be he canuse the front winch and the one on the side to control direction.

Another idea that might tempt you is to mod the front bumper so you can run a winch cable down it, this will allow you to winch to pull the vehicle round in a particular direction as well as straight ahead.

Sorry not great pics, look on the corners of the bumper, see the grooves. They locate the winch line, the underside shot you can see the additional bracing added to cope with the lateral forces.

I agree with the "recovery gear before upgrades comment". I Learned that the hard way.

ANd 300!....that's GENIUS!!!!

JC,

I don't have a rear receiver hitch anymore and I don't like the departure angle with an external rear winch. Instead, we are planning on installing a rear winch plate inside the truck. We have one that fits the D90 and will try to make it fit in the Disco. It has all the needed hardware to weld it onto the frame. If we get it working I'll send you some pics.

Sweet deal...if I did get one installed permanently inside the truck, I'd like for it to be ATLEAST a 9k-lbs. winch. What will you guys be using?

I had the Warn 8274-50 on my CJ5 and loved it. I would like to move the 9.5XP to the back and the 8274 in the front.

wheeling alone isn't very smart, I get calls during dinner or at night because someone went wheeling alone and needs to be pulled out

That's because they weren't as prepared as I am...

I already know what sort of South FLA terrain my truck can and cant handle, so I try to avoid that ones that it CANT handle.

This is the one type of location I try to avoid...

That day, that pole was as far as I went.

In this area, the mud is anywhere from 12 to 18" deep, and isn't soggy enough to allow the tires to cut through to the coral below for traction. My truck's drivetrain gets trapped in this type of mud. The truck then sinks and is a floating body with buried drivetrain. If you're alone, you're not goin home that night...ask me how I know...
