perhaps I will consider that instead. I am planning on getting a firestik setup for the antenna....I will mount the antenna on the wheel carrier as shown on the instructions at discoweb.

Not at the moment, I'll be taking a fresh batch of pics of my truck this week. Gotta clean up some rust, and straighten up cables from where I sold the HAM radio I had in the truck (gotta pay the bills...). But, for my CB antenna, I got a coil-base antenna and used an angle mount to put it above the left fender. It's a good spot that I wouldn't be using for anything else, and it's a good distance away from the transmitting antennas I was using with the HAM radio. The CB itself is mounted on the overhead plastic thingy above the passenger seat, in place of the passenger sunvisor (which didn't work anyway).

Nope, not even close. FRS and GMRS work at about 460MHz, CB is 28-30MHz. A dual-band HAM radio (2-meter/440) can be modified to work with FRS/GMRS, but HAM radio is a licensed service, and requires an exam and fees to use ($15 for a ten-year license).

I use the Cobra handheld and have not had any problems. A CB is usually used to communicate with your buds while on the trails. You are usually not more than a few hundred yards from each other - if you are following good rules of offroading with a group - as in, you are responsible for the guy behind you. If you need to go more than that, well, face it buddy, you're lost and when you catch up to the group, you're gonna kick the guy's ass who was in front of you and didn't do his job.
My three friggin' cents.

[shrugs] I've never used CB on the trail, since I can never seem to find anyone to wheel with. But in general, a mobile CB will have better performance than a handheld in all aspects. Just lending some of my experiences as a radio technician.

why not an inverter? I'm picking one up before the end of the weekend as I use my laptop in the truck from time to time, and it's cheaper to buy one than to buy a car charger for my cell.
I dunno, you can pick up a decent one at an electronics store for less than 25 bucks, and it's pretty handy.

I have a small one I got from Wal-Mart so I could charge my handheld HAM radio and laptop on the road (suprisingly, I haven't gotten DC chargers for either one yet). I keep it portable so I can move it from vehicle to vehicle. Definitely worth getting!

ours is old now....we bought it when inverters were around $80-100. Its a small wattage one....but im sure for that price you could get one that runs a fridge now.
I dont have mine mounted....I would like to wire one up in the rear though......plugs comming out behind the storage bins.
