My question is should I by the medium or heavy duty OME springs? And depending on the answer, which shocks soft or firm.
Details: 03 D2 SE currently stock. Gearing up for off-road, which will be 1 maybe 2 weekends a month with guys that go for more than pre-cut trails. Definitely want to get at least a brush guard but may go with off-road bumper (no winch) with brush guard. Also want Rock Sliders, front to back skid plates, and I'll have the SD Roof Rack. With the lift, the tires will likely be 245/75-16 or 265/75-16. I can see bringing 100+ lbs of support gear and have put 400-500 lbs of material for construction or landscaping in the back of my previous truck. Would still like a "half way decent" (smooth??) ride on-road, so I'd like to know what to expect. I know this is probably the millionth posting with a question about suspensions, but I am asking specific to OME as at least that I have decided. |

You should stick with either the 779 or 751 HD front springs and the 762 rear HD springs along with only the OME H.D. shocks for the type of wheeling you may be doing and the weight you will be carring.
Where do you plan to find a SD rack, they are few and far between as used only. Don't go wasting money on under body armor, buy a goo set of diff guards and sliders and stay away from the rest since it really isn't needed. You know, you don't have a CDL, so you can't use lockers. Take your time building this up as you go so you don't spend money where it won't help you. Yell when you get ready and I'll show you where to get the better prices on the suspension. First thing you should do is go have your front drive shaft rebuild to prevent their common failure. Yeah he is talking about rebuilding the front drive shaft with greasable joints. If you are capable of doing it yourself it won't be too expensive, if not I have heard it costing from $150.00 - $200.00 depending on where you are and who you use. It will be considerably less if you can take it off yourself and carry it in as opposed to having the place take it off, assuming you have something else to drive. You can also look into replacing the whole entire shaft if you want with a Tom Woods or A great Basin Rovers one. Umm you don't have CDL so I don't believe you can drive with out the shaft but I am not 100% on the '03, I have an '00 with CDL so I can drive with one shaft, BUT never offroad.

When you are decideing on suspension set it up for how you will drive 90% of the time. No good having soft springs for flex offroad if you carry heaps of wieght the majority of the time on road, likewise can't get heavy duty springs to carry a lot of wieght and expect them to flex up great.
Proberly the best compromise is to put medium springs and polyair bags, this will mean that you can set it up for what you are doing at the time, less wieght let the air out and decent ride and flex, more weight more air and retain ride quality. Go for reasonably firm springs at the front( not harse though) as this makes a big difference when going down steep hills, and won't really effect front end flex that much. Either way though OME is damm good stuff.

If you run the HD springs in the front and dont plan on bumper it may sit a bit nose high. Get the HD shock N107 and N108.

Both the 751's and the 779's are considered to be HD front springs. The 751's, although they were designed for the Classic, D1 and the Defender, give the D2 more support in a D2 the the 779's do if you are going to running a winch and bumper.
If you aren't going to go with the bumper and winch, stay with the 779, although still considered the HD coil for the D2, it will ride a little better unloaded. Mike |
