I'm looking to do up the Disco with a little better stereo than the last one-
Nakamichi old school 75x4 amp, 8" sub in the rear, DVD head unit, AudioControl ESP processor. I didn't like the Infinity speakers in the last Disco- I think they sounded like total tinny, shrill crap. I considered Focal, but can't score as good a discount- Looking at Boston Acoustics or MB Quart Reference Series. Can't decide what to do. I considered using an MB Quart 6.5" and a 2 way Polk mid/tweeter setup also since I alread have the 4" 2 way Polks. Opinions?

I dig Polks- I have nothing but Polks at home... and I dig JL subs... but their component sets are horrid from what I've heard of them so far. There were several cars at SEMA that had them and I thought they sounded like Alpine- which isn't good.
I might try an MB Quart 6.5 and a Polk mid/tweeter... maybe.

I am tempted by the Polks... they are also marine rated so a little water won't nuke 'em. The Reference series MB Quart goes deeper though and although I plan to use a small sub, the 6.5's that go deeper tend to be punchier- I like punch more than depth to an extent. It's gotta go deep, but not overkill like most basser rigs- but I want to feel the punch.

I've always got on well with Pioneer speakers.
I have found over the years that you do generally get what you pay for though, a budget fancy set of speaks may look really cool and on paper at least be superb, but IMO even a basic higher quality set of speakers nearly always sound better.

If something from the department store sounds good to you, then it would be money wasted on high end stuff, that's true. I worked my way through college as a studio and live musician, so unfortunately I have the curse of thinking I need more accurate music. I'd be happier if I could drop $150 on a CD player and speakers but I'd be sitting there for 8-10 hours a day on a road trip getting aggravated that the stereo doesn't sound good. I don't even listen to the stock stereo in the truck now because it sounds bad. I'm cursed.

I looked at Focal- but nobody I know can hook me with a discount. I like good sound, but I'm also cheap.

Get the polks, and get a matching polk sub or a JL(my fav.) too. My stereo sounds great even at 85mph with the loud flowmaster and lots of road noise. But mainly got the polk DB series because they looked really good in the car,water-proof,and sounded good. Also I think dynamat could help out

I plan to dynamat the whole interior- I always do, I love that stuff. I'm kinda leaning towards the MB Quart 6.5 with Polk mids and tweeters- just need to make sure the spot in the doors for the mids is deep enough. Should be- same as the DI stock speaker placement

I ran Boston Acoutics in all my SQ comp vehicles. I did use Polk subs though.
I'm a huge BA fan, and intend on oufitting the D1 with them. Focal speakers are good too, but I tried some on a demo and they really didn't do any better than my BA's |
