Default Project RRC Snorkel COmplete

Well, going to be most likely hitting a trail this weekend, and with the stead rain we have been getting, I can imagine deep water crossings will be encountered. Being a believer in the " Safe and sorry" saying, got me off my ass in the cool weather today and I did my snorkel.
Originally I intended to have it runng all the way to the roof, but decided that was unnecessary. I decided to follow the H1/expedition vehicles design.
Anyway, here is a step-by-step. Total cost about 40-50$
2.5" PVC

The tools

3" flex Hose(metal)I cut the flute looking thing in front, and fitten it over it.

3" PVC 45" Angles

2'2/5" Ford Tractor Breather Cap(THe bottom was cut). I cut a piece of the PVC pipe about 1.5 foot high. Ofcourse painted it glossy black.

Now the fun part, cutting into the Aluminum.

The whole ( I had to make it slightly larger wiht a file)

Cut away from the inside of the hood so it doesn't pinch the flex hose.

Insert/test fit the PVC Angle.

Attach the other angle to it.

I ended up using an old silencer from my Cherokee as a connecto betheen the flex hose and the PVC Angle piece(as they are both 3").

Tape it up nice for water proofing

Then I inserted the flex hose into the PVC 45" Angle connectors. Nice and tight and snug.

How it looks in front of the air box
Zip ties to the trick to hold it in place.

Than the rest. Inserted the Breather cap into the pipe(made some cuts at the top so that I can use an adjustable clamp to tighten), and the some silicone to seal and make things pretty.

VOILA , DONE!

I will keep you all posted on its functunality.
The thing I tired to keep in mind is if I ever wanted to change it(extend it, use different material, etc) I totally can.
IMO it beats shelling out 329US for almost the same thing.
Let me know what you think.

I'm gonna go ahead and tell you: that 3" metal flex hose IS CRAP. IT WILL fall apart and either let crap enter the intake system or suck parts of the metal flex hose into the engine. Anytime that flex hose rubs against something, it breaks and flakes off. The flakes end up going into the engine or fall onto the street. For some reason, even at the bends it just decides to fail.

I have done this. It sucks. Go ahead, un-zip tie that shit from your truck and save yourself the trouble.

Go get some plastic dryer hose. Yes, the white stuff that looks extremely flimsy. It will hold up much better. This is what I run, works like a charm.

Just FYI...

Hank: Thanks for your useless replies.

LR Max: GOod advice. I had used the flex hose before on my BMW( I had a CAI made), and never encountered a problem. I will see how it holds up in a few months and go from there.

Funrover: no part number sorry. Go to Ebay and type Ford breather cap.

Do you think your snorkel will have any affect on the air intake of the vehicle? Just wondering.

Well this is how I look at it.
1) THe stock trumpet type thing on the front is only about 1 3/4". It sucked really hard through it.
2) I removed the whole front panel- felt like the truck was breathing better and sounded increible.

3) Most of my snorkel components are wide - 2.5"-3". That should be plenty adequate for air.

4) Now I have put my hand where the openings are, and even at IDLE you can feel the air getting sucked. Once some gas is applied, it actually sucked my hand in.
Seems to work well.
My truck idle's the same, and feels the same on the HWY and everywhere else.

The Ford Snorkel Top works out real great, and does the real job of keeping rain water out, and other crap.

Somehow, the snorkel top made a huge difference from the 90 degree PVC knuckle. I gained some MPGs just slightly.

Hmmm, noticing a weird thing. In HALF a tank I did 80miles! WTH? I hope it is just my gauge that is just messing up.
i mean I did have about 400lbs of stuff in it yesterday and was doing about 130km on the HWY, but that still shouldn't be.
