Default Receiver hitch capabilities

If my understanding is correct the correct term for the downward force a hitch receives is called tongue weight?

I ask because I've seen hitch racks that people store motocross bikes as well as mopeds on. Can the receiver hitch on my D1 handle the wieght of a 500 to 800 lb bike? Thinking of adapting or building one for my "crotch rocket"

probably not. rated tongue weight is usually about 1/10 that of the hitch rating and IIRC the D! has a 5K lb hitch. that would mean a 500lb tongue weight. not the problem with those motorcycle trays is that they sit so far back that they really torque the hitch. so you really need to cut the approved tongue weight in half to get the carrying weight of a tray like that. I'd be hesitant to put anything heavier than about 250# on a hitch tray like that. probably the reason you see most of those carrying only dirt bikes and mopeds.

FWIW I have seen a tray like that that adds a single wheel out the back to take some of the weight. that might be able to hold more of the weight.

Stock hitch tongue weigh is 350 pounds, If you can pick up the trailor and hitch it up you are in good shape.
I have pulled a tarilor weighing a good 4500 pounds loaded and no tongue weight issues.
If you have your owners manual, check it out, there is good info in there regarding your limitations.

I think some people sell sankey trailers without the tubs, so you could get a frame set up for bike, plus a kit box. Should be cheaper than standard too.
