I remember seeing a pic of a Disco1 with a Super Charger that was mounted off to the side near the alternator or something, and I believe they were running an intercooler. Just wondering if anyone here has any info on that one or one similar.
I'm not talking about the Rimmer units that mounted above the intake. |

I thought all the supercharged 3.9's all exploded!
A bunch of D-90's had tried it.... I don't think it ended well for most. If anyone can do it... you're the man!

I just saw a d90 at Paragon this weekend with a SC. I dont know who made it, but it took the place of the intake manifold. Pretty slick!

Disco
where can on get this set up? is it something you pieced together? If so what are the pieces needed for fitting?

The supercharger can be purchased quite easily there in the USA from various manufacturers such as Vortech, Procharger etc. I purchased mine from (Bill Schmulo of Schmulo Racing in Chatsworth California). It will come with a universal mounting bracket which make the fitting of it easy, you will however have to decide what size pulley you want to fit as this determines the amount of psi your blower will deliver. On a stock LR motor you can safely run 9psi without lower your compression. Vortech manufacture quite a large range of superchargers. Some come with the SQ gearing (Super Quiet) or those that whistle, you decide. Once you have decided to go down this track, you need to fit an intercooler (you don't have to but I strongly recommend you do). I'm sure there will be a number of radiator/intercooler manufacturers in your area. Spearco is one of the larger operations. The plumbing material from the blower to the intercooler, thence to the plenum is a matter of choice. You can opt to use plastic or rubber hose with pipe clamps or metal pipe welded and bent to suit. Mine is made with 3" stainless steel tube. You will need to fit an aftermarket oil cooler as the intercooler that you will fit will displace the OEM one. Then you need to install an engine management system and have it tuned to the new air & fuel delivery your engine is getting. If your injectors cannot supply the necessary fuel you will need to fit bigger ones, possibly even an adjustable fuel regulator. The list of things you need to do is not endless although the overall cost of the modification depends on the quality of the individual parts you decide to fit.

That's a damned sexy setup- obviously well thought out and executed properly. The ones that sit atop the engine are good for 'gee whiz' looks under the hood, but tend to ruin the engine.
Back in the late 80's there was a bolt-on kit using a Sprintex blower. It also sat off to the side of the engine and had its own piggyback ECU. It was silly expensive, but worked very well. It's been out of production for quite a while now, but the 88 Range Rover test mule posted the same 0-60 as the new RR Sport w/supercharger. Shameless plug- DAP was the developer of that kit back in the day...

I remember the Sprintex unit as I was considering it when I decided to supercharge. There was a company here on the West Coast of Oz that was trying to get kits off the ground but eventually folded.

I am curious as to why the need for an intercooler. If you wanted more air in the cyclinder, couldn't you just up the boost a little. I know that for a turbo the intercoller is required to cool down the air heated up by the turbo to make it more dense again. Does the supercharger also heat up the air. Wouldn't a intercooler only bring the air back to ambient temp.

Just by the act of compressing air and moving it through warm metal parts it will still benefit greatly from an intercooler. If you didn't run it through an intercooler you would be missing out on the full potential of a forced-induction system. I'm such a huge fan of turbo/super-charging, this would be an awesome project some day!
