Default Winch?

Question:

Anyone put a front recvr hitch on a RRC? If so, can you tell a bit about it?

Anyone use a Warn winch that utilizes the 2" recvr hitch (XD9000i MULTI-MOUNTTM PORTABLE)? Thinking of adding a front hitch (for both winch and pushing a trailer into the yard...) and then getting a hitch mount winch.

Bro in Law, mech engineer, thinks the 2" recvr wont handle the side load need to winch at angles, friend with a HUGE dodge says he uses it only becuase of the ability to winch front or rear...

Any thought?

I would agree w/ your Bro on the angle issue.

I could not recommend a receiver mounted winch for this reason, and also -just as importantly- for the significant reduction in approach angle. That thing will stick pretty far out!

i tried doing that on my rrc and my approach angles were all scrued up..
3x on ur bro inlaws advice about the lateral force.. it will be difficult with a regular hitch but if u get one custom made i bet you you can do it.
but if it is only for getting the boat trailer into the yard it is a great help.

1st rover.....on your avatar, did you have to check with air traffic control to bring that beast back down? Kudos to the grapes it took to get that air!

I reckon I need to throw out my credential first. I am a mech. engineer...

With that said, For the most part in winching, ever rarely, if ever, do you need to wince at more than say, a 30 degree angle. So there is *some* lateral force, but not a great amount.

I know that trailer hitches aren't rated as high as the winch is, but at the same time, people ARE running them with no issues. So practical experience is greater than sitting at the desk crunching numbers (an important aspect of engineering to consider). So the system is proven and as long as all parts are nominal (i.e. not rusted away or half-assed welded or grade 2 bolts used, etc) then it should work fine.

Now, the reason I discourage the use of the warn multi mount is because the winch is exposed. I used to live near a 4 wheel parts and EVERY TIME I walked in there, a multi-mount was sitting there, each time from a different vehicle/owner. Rocks, trees, cars, etc WILL bust a winch housing and WILL bend the mount. Each one of said examples had a chunk missing out of the winch and the entire mount was tweaked. This is not covered under warranty. Now that I live near Clemson 4 wheel (the only distributor of warn products in the southeast), everytime I go in there, they've got the same story. A tree reached out and bit the warn. Now warn no workie.

The design works, its just that you'll wack it against something, and then all of a sudden it is a 120 lb worthless rock. Oh, and don't say you'll keep it in the back of your rig until you need it. That is just stupid. It'll roll around, busting up everything and when you need it, it'll take you a while to set it up, IF you can get to it. Lately, I've been getting stuck as to where I cannot access my rear cargo area, having the tree strap and winch remote handy is crucial.

Go with a traditional mount. Not to mention it won't get stolen...
