So I've just bought a used Warn XD 9000 and, I have a couple of maintainence questions.
The winch has set for a while, so I'm wondering if I should go ahead and break down the winch and replace the grease. On that note, would anyone have instructions, or a writeup of how to break down the XD9000? I only have the manual with the broke apart diagram for ordering replacement parts. Also upon reading up on some "winch knowledge", I've seen it mentioned that upon inspecting the winch cable, you should also coat the cable with some Chain/Cable lubricant. Supposidly these lubricants penetrate and coat the cable to extend it's life. My question is: Is this necessary or desired? I don't mind doing it, and it seems like a good idea, comments? The particular chain/cable lube supposidly doesn't attract dust and dirt because it sets up dry.

I went on line to one of the Warn sites and was able to download a good diagram for my winch.
As for messing with the cable, the best thing that you can do is to wait till it kinks up a couple of times and replace it with rope, so much stronger and easier to work with. Mike |

Even if you don't NEED to use it, you should every now and again. Just to keep everything lubed and keep switches from sticking. Getting it hot helps dry out any condensation in there as well.

As far as lubing the wire goes, I say do it. I know a lot of people will disagree with me because they have never done it and they have never had problems. I use wire cables on work boats all the time and we goop the hell out of them every month whether they get submerged or not in salt water.
It gives you a chance to inspect the line while you are applying the lube which is not a bad thing at all. So until you get enough pennies saved for the super cool sythetic line, just get something to coat it with. It is cheap insurance at any rate.

I bought a used X9 for $300. It needed a solenoid, and a complete teardown. Tearing down an X9 is a joke, its easy. Solenoids were $40 off ebay.
Be patient. Id rather find a nicer "brand name" used winch than buy a new elcheapo winch anyday! Check craiglist, ebay, forums, etc.

Thanks for the advice guys...
I know how cool the synthetic is, but after dropp'n some $$ on the winch it's gonna be a little while till I snag that setup. For right now, looks like I'm gonna be lube'n the cable as I inspect it, hopefully it's in good shape. But if it's shady look'n, I will be going with the synthetic line. Also I am going to replace the hook with a self locking safety hook pretty much asap. The little Warn factory hook just isn't doing it for me. *Anymore advice on the XD9000 is greatly appreciated...

Once you are ready to go Rope...check RoverAccessories.com for their line. $350 and you get 25ft of heat resistant line (the end that stays on the drum more ofted) 75ft synthetic rope with the last 10 ft being abrasion resistant.
Last time I gave a quote on WARN's rope...the price was in the 600s.

I got my 100' x 3/8" of synthetic for just over $200 .. http://www.harshterrain.com/Parts/Re...ope-Menu.shtml ... had rock chafe guards and a thimble at the end ... no nice heat resistant line at the end.. but I've used it dozens of times and never melted anything.. http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/recovery/ropes.htm has also been highly recommended in the past, but I haven't dealt with them..

Yeah there are a handful of inexpensive good lines out there...
I was just stating the one that has the most for the best price.
