So I've got the Winch commin in on Monday. Can't wait to get that baby installed. I'll have it hooked up to my ONE battery temporarily. I've got an Optima Red Top (850CCA). The Minimum requirement is 650CCA. I'hope to be ok with this set up for about 3 weeks until I come up with a way to neatly pack a yellow top at the rear of the truck and NEATLY run the wires to the front. As always, I'll being doin a write up / picture documentary.
I still owe you guys the one for the Mantec and the Initial Bumper Install (nothing complicated) ![]()

I have a 9.5XP. The main thing you have to worry about is that they are wider than any other winch and very few production winch or bull bars will take them. But they are an excellent winch. With your battery it is not so much the CCAs (they are important though) it is how many AH's they have. The AH (amp hours) is basically how much energy they hold, where CCAs is how quick they can get that energy out. Most of the Optimas are only around 50AH, which is not that much. So be careful how long you winch for as I have flattened mine to a state that the engine stopped due to no power to run the electrics. Also see if you can rig up a fast idle for when you winch to get the alternator pumping out as much power as possible. I run mine at around 1,500 RPM.

Ian, THANK you VERY much for that bit of information. Very Helpful indeed. I will get a second batter (Yellow-top) installed sooner than anticipated I guess.

So I'm looking at the Winching Techniques guide on the site...
http://www.warn.com/corporate/images...US.readers.pdf Anyone notice anything familiar in the illustrations besides the winch?

Optima mentions that you can not mix a Red Top with a Blue or Yellow or any other combination do to difference in discharge and charge rate they even mention not to mix 2 like batteries of different ages. You might want to get to matching batterys.
I had to deal with this a couple of years ago when I went to duals. Mike |

An extra point to note is that even if the winch will fit in, the slit for the cable may not line up with the winch as the motor is large, but not the gearbox. Therefore the winch drum will tend to sit to one side.

Nice winch! Make sure to break it in before hitting the trail, as with ANY winch.
The only way to mix dissimilar batteries is with certain kinds of isolator/managers. Otherwise, use two batteries of the same type and age. I highly recommend NOT using an optima. Their failure rate recently is staggering.
