03/15/09 - Everglades trip (sight seeing, not wheeling)
PM ME IF INTERESTED!!! otherwise i won't guarentee to keep you updated! Jupiter Rover and Tcfpl (sp?) have already been put on my list of possible rover owners rolling with us.
Sunday 03/15/09 **still flexible**, but i should have a day or 2 in advance if it is rescheduled (other weekdays that week will be a possibility for a trip back down there)
time- 7am or 8am until sunset
Location- Drive from exit 131 Ft. Myers, south to Alligator Alley, continue on US 41 east until Loop Road, drive loop road, then take Janes Scenic Loop back through the swamp and national forest to naples
I'd like to get a Roll Call going include you (and ALL passengers), what kind of vehicle and what stuff you have to take with you. The more carpooling we have the better off we will be to see stuff...more cars = more noise
Basically I'm going down there to encounter animals, hopefully lots of snakes, definitely lots of alligators. We (or at least you) will mostly be staying in the car (but still within feet of these animals), on foot trails, on the dirt roads, or in open DRY terrain. We don't wanna be walking/driving through swamp this time of year. 1. its highly illegal in protected areas like that 2. it is smack dab in the middle of alligator mating season and they will be VERY VERY aggressive.
this is NOT an OFFROAD/MUDDING TRIP, some of it may occur cuz sometimes these roads are shit or washed out, but its illegal to wheel down there and they will confiscate your truck if caught
I'll have my camera, (possibly) my kayak/gear, snake sticks, bucket, glove, pillow cases, blah blah blah for dealing with animals
4x4 is preferred, but not necessary. cars can make it on these roads, but it will be a rough ride and some of the (legal) detours we will make in the national forest will be impossible. if you're car is lowered, it won't have a prayer, so basically 4x4 or 2wd SUVs/trucks should come only.
i recommend everyone bring drinks/food with them, but we may stop in everglades city if we have enough people for a bite to eat. I also recommend lots of cameras (there are TONS of wildlife to see and take pics/videos of). I also recommend you know all of florida's poisonous snake species by heart on sight and bring a walking staff (it puts distance between you and gators).
if you want to come with me, DON'T FUCK AROUND. Listen to me and follow my instructions when we're dealing with the animals. we dealt with gators within inches of us and handled venomous snakes on the last trips we made without incident (Because scott and nick were responsible and helpful to me and to each other). This isn't time for shenanigans, do that in fort myers on your own time. not mine. It is illegal to feed and harass the alligators and even the other wildlife in some areas, so don't do it. There are park rangers all around, I don't want to get on their bad side. Some people from other forums may come with me as well including rover forums and maybe CCR, so act appropriately as well to other people besides wildlife.
it was last time, 2 guys came with me inside the rover. caught 2 rattlesnakes, saw a beautiful barred owl, over 300 alligators ranging from 8inches in length to 12ft in length.
