Hi there. You have a Capstain drum winch. It's more than likely a P.T.O (power take off) and looks as though it may be a Fairey make. It's very valuable and I would care for it greatly if I were you. A good capstain winch over in the UK sells for megga bucks as it's original eqip and is not made any longer. Could you post up some more pics so I can see? Does it have any letters stamped on the top of the drum?Does it still have the P.T.O attachment going from the capstain to the engine?

What can you tell us about the truck...looks very nice.Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - Options

*****SORRY...that link if for the wrong winch!!! I will look for the capstain winch!*****

Thanks for the info....as for the truck, I was told it is an old Royal Navy truck, I do not know much more....but I am trying to find more info.

As for the winch it is not hook up to the engine all I have is the hand crank.

the little lever knob to the right of the capstan should engage it with the engine. you push down then towards the motor. In the engine compartment there should be like a disk with a few prongs and attached to the handle is a prong with holes. When lined up it should connect it to the engine and run. Pulled plenty of things with the capstan. Its a good winch but you need to have the proper rope otherwise it will be dangerous due to rope failure.

P.S. Nice looking series

If you have the vin number of the truck it will be pretty easy to find out it's history. I can guarantee these chaps will know everything about it 100%. When it left the factory up untill it left the shores of GB.
