Yes overtime powder will chip, not so much scratch. In your original post I didnt know you were talking about just a rattle can job, I was thinking more along the lines of actually stripping, priming, spray a good quality automotive paint, than clear in which case after prep time and materials is around the cost of just getting the wheels coated.

If you are just going to half ass it with some spray paint you might as well not even bother with it.

half ass it? hardly. the rims will be stripped, sanded, primered, and painted. i guess you've never seen a really nice rattle can job on wheels, they will turn out great and be easily touched up WHEN they get chipped.

I know a place in Gadsden that would powder coat all 5 for about $375. They quoted me that anyway.

Chris is not one to half ass on the aesthetics of his truck. Spray paint can look good.

I have had powder coated wheels, rattle can wheels, and have also sprayed my wheels with a automotive paint with hardener/clear like you would on a body panel.

As far as durability goes powder has will last the longest on/off road, than auto paint, than rattle can. The problem with a rattle can is there isnt any hardener/catalyst/adhesion promoter in the paint making it very easy to chip even when highway driving. You also are not going to be able to seal the paint to well with a spray clear, and break dust will impregnate the clear and the paint much easier than a high quality paint or powder.

Really im not trying to start shit or get in an argument, just trying to help out and give you some insight from first hand experience.
