I was just reading the other day that they only made a couple of dozen stage one 88's !! and almost all except for 2 or 3 went to Trinidad !! Ithink there were about 24 or 30 sent to Trinidad - and that's it !!!

you have a rare beast - excellent !!! it looks great !!

here is a quote from a Stage one page

Quote:
Ever since I first fell in love with Land Rovers, living in the Middle East in the early 1980s, there was one vehicle I had always really wanted - a short wheelbase Stage One. No point in looking for an original one of course - only 29 short wheelbase vehicles were made, and all but five went to Trinidad. But I had always thought it would be easy enough to rebuild a standard LWB Stage One onto a modified four cylinder 88" chassis - the main differences being the front crossmember, steering relay mounting points, and engine/gearbox mounts.

jaguiler

so far i know of seven 88's and yes i did some research on the rarity, 29 in total were made, 24 were originally sent to a land rover dealership in jamiaca that never paid for them so land rover trinidad bought all 24 and sold them locally. i beleive the prototype and one other are in the uk so that leaves three not accounted for. so i own two of them a good friend of mine has another so i have access to 3 ( the orange one in the photo is the 3rd one)
and yes its the original engine just not the original manifold if you look carefully on the right hand bank you will see the 'rover' written sort of being covered by the hoses. its the 3.5 v8 the same as used in the range rovers of the same era
this is a great forum by the way

You're very lucky to own 2 of those rare trucks. Looks like you've got some cool places to drive them as well. I'm picking up my Stage 1 109 this weekend. I have yet to actually see it in person and I have only ever seen 2 others so you can imagine what my anxiousness must be like right now. I'll post pics when I get the 109 home.
