I think the early 4.6's were prone to overheating and shifted liners resulting in blown head gaskets and an expensive repair. Make sure it has a full service history, and no history of overheating. The 4.0's were less prone to this.

From my own experience of owning a 3.5 Defender-110, a 3.9 Disco, and a 4.6 Range Rover Vogue...
...the 3.5 (with SU carbs) is bullet-proof, even though I abuse it. The 3.9 has never let me down, but I'm more careful with it. The 4.6 is a costly lemon! And so is the pneumatic suspension that came with it - can't wait to see the back of it! I think the the 4.0 with a coil conversion is about the most reliable P38 combo you'll get. If it's been looked after, the you can expect to double the existing mileage easily. (just a humble opinion - use it, don't, whatever) Den |

Thanks for the info. Funny I just got a message about this car a few minutes before I checked the boards. I need to head to Nashville anyway, maybe I'll go and check it out. They just added extended shocks and a new winch.
Thanks again, Jeff |
