Default 96 Range Rover - New Owner

Hey guys, I'm a new owner of a 1996 Range Rover 4.0

I'm browsing here trying to collect some information as I am not very familiar with some of the features. I bought this truck with money left over from a previous auto sale so I no longer have car payments!

Couple of questions hopefully some of you can answer. I'm looking for the owners manual. I've tried downloading the RAVE ISO's on another site and the person I bought the truck from gave me a RAVE disk. However, I can only find MY98 and up for the owners manual. Is there anyway of obtaining it from one of you guys in a PDF format?

There are a couple of issues with this truck that don't seem to be affecting the way the car drives but I want to make sure.

1.) When starting the car, the ABS light stays on for 15-20 seconds then shuts off once I start driving.

2.) I have an error that pops up at when I shut the car off, "Odometer error".

3.) I have the Key Fob for the vehicle but It doesnt seem to work. Do I need to take it to a dealership to have it reprogrammed?

Thanks for your help and I will probably have more in the future!

-Josh

you can download the RAVE in PDF for free, cant remember the site but do a google search and you'll find it. As far as the ABS light, if its not beeping at you scrolling an ABS/traction fault message in the message center don't worry about it. try replacing the batteries and buttons on your key fob, the kit is pretty cheap. As far as the odometer thing, i have no idea, but im sure someone more knowledgeable than myself on here will chime in. ENJOY IT AND FOR GAWD SAKES TAKE IT OFF ROAD!

Welcome!

No major differences between '96 and '98 I think. The rave should be good for most purposes. You can also get a copy of Microcat (the parts catalogue) here..

Microcat Land Rover 11/2008

Coming to your questions.

1. Normal - it stays lit till the car reaches 10 km/h (about 7mph)

2. Errors that pop up with a single audible beep when shutting down or starting up are I think called "Category 1". Not life threatening. RR electronics are incredibly interdependent so usually one glitch can affect a dozen different functions in a cascade but as far as I know the odo reading only feeds the trip computer. And all that does is tell you your average speed, fuel mileage and (ahem) distance traveled. Others may have more info on this though.

3. How do you mean the fob doesn't work? Other than locking and unlocking the doors it also controls the engine immobiliser and anti-theft alarm. If it didn't work you wouldn't be able to start the car? In any case try fresh batteries as a first step.

Good luck and enjoy your Rangie!

-----------

Haha! Stevel posted while I was typing. Great minds and all that!

Wow guys, you won't believe what I have been dealing with concerning this truck. I will report back once I figure out what is going on but essentially I bought this truck from a place called Tidewater Rovers from a guy name John Miller. If that doesn't set off a red flag, do a google search for Tidewater Rovers and you will see what I mean...Stay tuned.

Owners' Manual is pretty much the same.

The ABS light will go off after the wheel sensor has counted a certain number of wheel revolutions.

MIGHT be caused by the BeCM having been exchanged.

MIGHT be the batteries in the fob.
MIGHT be caused by a BeCM swap.

what does "doesnt seem to work" mean?
does it work, or does it not?

What I mean by it doesn't seem to work is i've changed the batteries and the lights light up, but nothing happens. I've read somewhere where you can put the key in the door, turn to lock it and hit lock at the same time and it will sync, but that didnt seem to work. So not really sure what else i could try on my own without taking it to Land Rover to get them to program it?

The remote receiver in the car is in the right rear quarterpanel. Try aiming the fob at that area rather than at the door lock or the dash through the window. Might work and might indicate a weak antenna or something.

Nah, that didn't seem to work. Looks like I'll just have to take it to the shop...

Default P38 Issues

If you just bought a P38, and don't know much about them, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR AIR POLLEN FILTERS...It is likely nobody has changed them in some thime. These allow air into the cabin, via the fresh air intake below the windsheild. Failure to change these air filters will lead to overheating of the fans (2) electrical circut, and will cause the circutboard in the fusebox to burn, which can cause all sorts of problems.

If your dash lights come on when you depress the pedal, it is time for a new ABS accumulator ball. These go bad after about 7 years, as the nitrogen in the diaphragm inside of it changes chemical composition, and renders the ball useless, offering no assist to the brake booster, which in turn makes the pump run too often, which can burn out the pressure switch on the Abs pump, making it VERY hard to stop the vehicle (if at all).

Another thing...if your EAS pump stops working (providing you still do have the air suspension, and someone else didn't already quit trying, and just put springs on it...) you can unplug the ground wire from the vehicle harness-side of the multiplug that goes to it, and ground it to the body, bypassing the (stupid) thermal switch. When the pump gets too hot, it trips the thermal switch, usually rendering the pump useless, and in need of replacement (another mechanic special). This will save you between $300-2800 (seriously).

Anyway, these are just 3 of the things that go wrong with P38's that mechanics like to charge an arm and a leg for.

Yes, and as someone else said...Get the Rave CD...If you can't get one for free, get one on ebay for about $8.00. The CD has full manuals for your vehicle, and is the most helpful reference to have when owning a rangie.

then makes and can make u feel like an

Default Call Me If You Have a Problem

Hello,

This is John Miller @ Tidewater Rover. I sold you this truck "as is" where is" but if you rember I gave you a rave cd (that is a shop manual on cd). If you lost it I will send another. I told you the FOB did not work. I even gave you a window regulator for the passenger front. Because I thought it might go out in a few months . It worked but popped occaisonally. Then you broke your upper tailgate over the weekend and we dropped what we were doing and put you on a matching colored upper tailgate in installed for $280.00. I think that was a bargain considering the dealer wants $1100.00 just for the glass. Come on now we have tried to help you every way I could. I told you the abs light went off when you went 10-15 miles an hour. That was standard for this truck. And come to think of it I believe we were trying to chase down a temp issue and we removed the speedo cluster to replace a temp guage. There is nothing wrong with it. I will clear the code if you need me to. At no charge if it bothers you. I can even get LR Charleston or Hilton Head to handle it as a favor to me if distance is a factor.

I offered to help you with the truck and you seem to be bashing me here. You need to call me and be a man and ask me a question. I have never ignored you. I will try to help you if I can. You know that.

I get very tired of people tearing something up and or blaming us for something they did, caused or abused.. I do not necessarily mean you. I think the economy is tuff and a lot of peolpe now want to blame anybody for their problems.

Any Questions Call Me. My name and and contact #'s are here. I am not being ghost with no name making blind accusations.

Respectfully submitted.

In the manual it describes a method of resynching your key fob

the following is from memory so check the manual for the exact process.

to ease the process description start with an unlocked RR.

1. push the lock button on the FOB
2. insert key and lock the doors.
3. pull key out and press the lock button again.

after step 3 you should hear the locks engage. hit unlock to confirm it's now working.

According to the manual the FOB will unsynch if the buttons are pushed too many times out of range etc as a security precaution.

Cheers

Don't worry about it JOHN. I'm done with you and your company and the shitty WASHED TITLED vehicle you sold me.

I'm now the proud owner of a 97 locked FZJ80 Landcruiser! PEACE!

Talking Reply from across the pond...

Hey,

Just a quick note in the defence of Jon Miller. I have dealt with John Miller on many occasions, and every time involving vast sums of money and bucket loads of trust... each and every time I've found Jon very accomidating and find it hard to believe that anyone could speak so low of him...

I think that anyone buying a 13 year old L/R and only having 3 minor issues (which do seam to have been resolved?) should be happy that their aren't more!!! Maybee our friend is better suited to the mundane lifestyle that is Toyota ownership (Incedentlly, how many of them do you see as Flag-ship Ministry of defence vehicles???).

It has always ben a pleasure dealling with Jon Miller, and I would advise everyone reading this not to be put off by the comments of our friend...

Yours trully

Justin... Manchester England

Justin,

Let me give you a little wake up call on John Miller.

#1: The title to the vehicle was washed, meaning it was a salvaged title vehicle but the title he gave me was clean. - Illegal

#2: The Transfer box ECU and selector motor was burned to a crisp. It was a used part put into the vehicle that wasn't installed correctly.

#3: He sold the vehicle to me not titled to him, but to his friend. He had been driving the RR for the past 2 years without titling the vehicle.

But yes, my mundane Toyota which can out tow, out perform and actually stay in working condition on any trail is best suited for me. Believe me Justin, I'm not the only one on this forum or others that feel the same or have had the same experience with Jon Miller.

I wonder if "Justin" actually posted his first and only post from a British ISP and if so whether he can do it again in two weeks?

Later,
