My 97 HSE was sitting for about 2 months. I have always had a problem with the radio and would have to tap on it to make it work. Now it will not work anymore at all. At the same time my climate control will not light up, it works as it should just does not light up. I'm wondering if this could be a bcm problem because I also got a EAS fault message and could not adjust the air ride for a while until the truck was driven about 20 minutes and then turned off for a few minutes then start the truck and back to normal. I just don't want to go buy a climate control and radio and then find out it is the computer. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Hi
I think you've got a couple of seperate problems. Firstly if the climate control does not light up take a look at the screen from an angle. Can you see the writing (very faint). If you can then the bulb in the unit has blown. Take out the hevac control and check the middle bulb (just behind the screen). If it's not blown just try re-seating it. This worked on mine. With regards to the EAS fault. This is either an air leak or eas pump fault. The seal in the pumps often fails and the car takes ages to reach the correct height. Take out the pump and look at the seal (a bit of disassembly required) if it looks nackered get the thing overhauled. Not sure about your radio problem I'm afraid. |

If your radio and Hevac panel are not being powered then it is probably Becm internal relay number 7 not contacting, but you need to do all the basic continuity checks on the associated cabling first. The top board of the Becm can be replaced to get round this if you can source one.
Your Eas fault does sound like a worn compressor but you really need to take off the cylinder head of the compressor to confirm it.(8mm socket and 12mm o/e spanner needed.) Where in the world are you ? If you are in the UK I can do a rebuilt compressor ,USA or row then you need to contact Shupack,(Dennis) at Rover Renovations, find him on www.rangerover.net - he can supply most EAS stuff. |

Hey thanks you guys for all the info. Yes I am in the US. I can faintly see the readings on the climate control and the climate control still functions fine.As for radio it just lights up but won't work, I used to tap it and it would work but now I think it is done for good. I'm going to pull out the climate control and check the bulb, can I get the bulb at any parts store? I will also check the compressor and see what's going on there. Is the process of removing the climate control difficult? Thanks again.

Hi
I thought as much. The faintness on the hevac is exactly what I experienced. Right, to remove the unit is not difficult. Basically it's held in with 4 screws. To access these you need to remove the side panels of the centre console. I prefer the following method 1) Remove the ash tray 2) Unscrew the switch panel (with the electric windows switches on). This is held on with two screws visible by openining the cubby box 3) Lift the panel backwards to access the screw to the gearbox wood facia 4) Unscrew this and lift it upwards slightly 5) Remove the right hand side centre console panel screws (3 screws i think) 6) Pull it down, away from the hevac unit and remove (a bit fiddly and you may need to remove the panel beneath the steering wheel for access). 7) Remove the left hand side panel 8) The four hevac screws should be clearly visible 9) remove these screws and remove the unit. Unplug the connectors and check the bulb behind the screen. Even if it is not blown try reseating it. Hope this helps |

Well, pulled out the climate control unit and checked the bulbs. The bulbs were all fine, I even ran power to them and they were working fine. I'm now guessing it is something inside the unit itself. guess I'll start looking for the climate control unit and a radio. Thanks for the removal directions, made it a breeze to remove.

Hi
Glad to hear the instructions worked but what a pain the bulbs ok. Inside the hevac unit is a panel which adjusts the brightness under varying conditions (i.e duller when lights are on and brighter when they are not). I presume yours has gone bang. Just out of interest does the thing light up when you turn the car lights on? Unfortunately the hevac units are not cheap but ebay seems to have them for between £80 - £110. |
