Default 98 HSE Fuel Door problem lives on!!!

ok replaced the fuel door switch and the actuator, the actuator when I plug it in will go to the open position and stay open making a whining noise. I was wondering being I have no owners manual if someone can tell me what that is in the passenger kick panel where it has a gas tank symbol on it? I'm very frustrated by now and just wondering what to do next besides bring it to the dealer? Any help very very appreciated. It almost seems like the switch is staying in the to open position?

Here is an idea, pull the connector to the actuator. hook up a test lite, if it lites up you got a problem. But start to back track from there. pull the switch see if it still lites. if doesnt its before the switch. if it does then its the connector and beyond that.

If its the switch in the right hand side its probably the inertia fuel cut off.It shuts the fuel pump down and turns on the hazard warning lights if you crash. The fuel door is controlled by the BECM,The easiest route if the supply is staying on is to trace the live wire in the trunk and put a switch on it.Or wire the original switch to the actuator.BECM don't come cheap

Thanks, I will try and trace the wire or rewire to switch. The simple problems always seem to turn into the pains.... Thanks again everyone.

Is there not a manual release for the fuel door in the passenger side footwell? I have one in my 99 Range Rover.

Gas Filler Lid Switch
The switch on the dash that opens the gas cap lid has often been known to fail -- even causing vehicles to be towed into the dealer through inability to gas up. If this happens to you, remove the right hand side panel in the load space so you can reach in and operate the latch from the inside by hand. If you are concerned about this problem occuring, you can take preventive measures by a) getting an updated switch installed and b) attaching a string or wire to the inside of the latch in advance, leading it out through the access door at the rear of the load space side panel. Rafael Herbosa had his first romance with his Range Rover when the gas filler lid would not open. He reports that he he modified the approach recommended here -- instead of adding a string, he bypassed the electrical circuit and created a nice small push button switch that activitates the actuator and wiring tapped on the rear light. His approach and others are detailed on the Fuel Filler Switch Fixes Page
