Default Brake Failure! HELP!

Today the brakes on my 96' Range completely failed...thank God I was close to home. I notice that the pedal goes all the way down as if its hitting something and I hear a clicking noise under the shifter when the brake is pressed. What could this be? I've already heard...master brake cylinder and brake booster. Has anyone else had this happen, and if so what was the fix? Thanks alot!

you need to start from the basics, trouble shoot, find out if you have a leaking hose, line or caliper and correct the problem before continuing.
are your pads completely worn out? is the abs pump working, (buzzing hmming sound when the key is on the "on" position.
if all is well then you may be looking at a new master cilynder.
that clicking you hear at the shifter is the interlock for the shifter (does not allow you to move out of park with out putting your foot on the pedal with ignition on).
the "hitting" you hear as the pedal travels is the just that , pedal travel to its maximum.
