Default Light problem

I have a 1997 HSE and a 1989 RRC. On the classic, the lights on the turn signals and windshield wiper glow. On the 1997 it does not and I wanted to know if it is suppose to light up. Also how hard is it to change a light in the message board? I had the left hand side go out but the LCD still works but it is not bright. Please let me know how to change this light.
Thanks

i never knew the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks of my Classic were supposed to be illuminated!? really? i was sure the symbols were just painted on there. they do not illuminate in my 2000 HSE either.

w regard to replacing the message center lights, this is pretty simple. Make sure you have radio code. Disconnect battery as you will be touching wiring and in particular some wiring for the ABS system is connected to one of the multiplugs you will disconnect. Extend the steering wheel to maximum and lower it to the lowest setting. Remove the screw covers (pry off w a slotted screwdriver) & the four screws that hold the trim panel underneath the instruments. When removing the panel disconnect the air vent hose. 4 screws to remove the instrument binacle fascia - 2 on the top part which screw upward into the binacle, and 2 on bottom. Careful the binacle fasci is brittle, cheap-assed plastic. Disconnect the fuel filler door multiplug and set aside the binacle fascia. Disconnect the multiplugs to the instrument pack. 4 screws to remove instument pack - 2 on top, 2 on bottom (its easiest to put the top 2 back in place when you have a magnetized screwdriver or one with those little wire extensions that can hold a screw). Remove instrument pack. The light bulbs are all labeled as far as which ones are which, and they are common enough bulbs avail at pep boys / autozone etc. Is a good time to check if any of the warning light bulbs and bulb holders are missing... e.g. if you bought the truck used, somebody may have pulled a bulb to get a warning light to go away... or you could have some that are just burned out. Also if you have JB Weld laying around, it would be a good time to fix cracks in the cheap-assed-plastic binacle fascia. :-) (but, I digress...). Reassemble in reverse process. Reconnect battery and reprogram windows. Enter radio code if necessary.
