Default In love but the Courting is soo Costly!!

Hello all. I am new to the forum but have been an avid reader. I purchased a 1998 RR 4.0SE 3 years ago and love my truck but have had to make a major repair every year. It currently has 93,000 miles and I had to get the air suspension converted and the blender motors replaced (my HVAC diagnostic light is still on ). Now I have a few questions that I need some expert assitance with:
1. I am having crazy front end vibration issues. If I hit a pot hole or a groove in the road my front end and steering wheel shakes uncontrollably for a few seconds. It eventually stops but is very scary and unsafe. The dealership says I need 4 shocks and a steering stabilizer and may need a drive line transfer case. HELP!!!
2. My engine valve/lifter has been ticking and a mechanic told me that I needed to flush out the engine. I tried Sea Foam but that didn't do a damn thing. I don't know if flushing out the engine would harm it or be detrimental to my RR's performance.

Any advice someone can lend me would be appreciated. I will upload some pics soon!

id post this on the "Range Rover Sport / P38" board - which is where most guys who own these trucks participate.

I have a 2000 4.6. I'll take a shot. I have replaced the shocks and a set of tires - the shocks were bad and caused uneven wear patterns on the tires. So unless you have newish tires, take a look as 'secondary' evidence that you may need new shocks. I would tend to think steering damper is more likely direct cause of your problem and that the shocks are just contributing.

on the valve lifter you can try a heavier viscosity oil particularly in the summer. i have this problem and this helped slightly. opionions on this board will vary as to how responsive you need to be to jump on fixing that. i've chosen to let mine go a while until i need some more substantial work done. its more of an annoyance than an acute problem.

btw - if you took to dealer, you might want to look for an indie shop with a rovacom computer who will re-set the HVAC system warning light for you (if its annoying)

I had two tires that were nearly balled that I replaced (the rear ones) and that didn't improve the shaking and/or vibration. Once you replaced your tires and shocks did you notice a huge difference?

I will definitely try the heavier oil but I was just concerned about how long the stuck lifter would go before causing serious engine problems.

This is probably a stupid but I am assuming an "indie shop" is an independant mechanic shop?

Thanks for the info and I will definitely post on the RR Sport Board.

My oil pump just went out. The oil light was on when I started it, and I let it idle for a few seconds and it started to tick, louder and louder. Well, I replaced the oil pump, and it took about 5 minutes for that lifter to fill back up and stop ticking.
I would say your lifter has some crap in it or it is worn. Is your oil light on?

on the bald tires, any chance they were moved from front to back? when i replaced my shocks and then tires yes it made a huge difference.

on the valve lifter noise: others smarter than i would be able to tell you whats making that noise and give you an opinion on how risky it is to delay fixing

yes - Indie = independant.

i got nothin on the front end. but my lifters were quited by getting rid of the fram filter and using a high quality one: it increased oil pressure by a lot...i also add lucas oil stabilizer to the oil and notice no noise and smoother operation.

No. The oil light is not on. I think the lifter is probably stuck with some gook that's why I wanted to try and flush the engine out to clean it b/c no matter how much cleaner I put in the ticking does not stop.

The balled tires were on the rear and those were the ones I replaced. I am hopefult that getting shocks and stabilizer will improve the ride.

I will definitely replace with the ac delco hd filter and heavier oil. I also have the stabilizer to try as well. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks!

sounds like a swivel preload issue to me but not sure if the p38s have the same or similar set up as the Classic.
