Unhappy Newbie...Just Bought 97 RR 4.0L and its Knocking....Help

I just purchased a 97 RR with the 4.0L It is mint inside and out. It has 104,470 miles on it. While at idle I can hear a knocking or ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. As soon as you start driving or rev the engine you cant hear it any more. The oil level is up. I bought a stethescope and there is not noise coming from the valve covers. The only place I could hear the noise was when I put the scope on the oil pan and you can hear a faint knocking noise. Anyone have any ideas, please Help.

My truck has done this for about 3 years, does it dissapear some times on tick over.Mine turned out to be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. It upsets the engine ECU by giving false mixture information .

not sure what you mean by "tick over". I used the stethescope on both exhaust manifolds and didnt get any noise. Only place I can hear the noise is on the oil pan. I was thinking it may be a rod bearing.

What would be the best way to check for an exhaust manifold leak. I found one on a GMC Jimmy one time while using SeaFoam injection cleaner. You put it throught the intake via the brake booster vac line and it will smoke like hell until it burns it all out. Thats when I saw the smoke coming out of an exhaust flange leak. Would that work hear maybe...

Default Ticking noise

I have the same noise on my 4.0 , I also have the same amount of mileage . The rocker arms have a small seated piece inside. they come loose and will make a ticking noise. I am getting mine repaired. It is a common noise. Where are you located? I know of a great mechanic in the Toronto area.

Joe,

tick over is idle.you should be able to hear if any gas is blowing out of the gasket. With the engine cold (the exhaust gets very hot)get someone to put their hand over the tail pipe this will make it leak a lot more and easier to check. If your oil pressure is ok and the knock dissapears as soon as you raise the revs just above idle and does not re appear under load Then its probably not a rod bearing. My truck did it for about 3 years, which worried me at first but it didnt develope into anything.only found the gasket was the culprit by accident when the gasket was changed when it got to noisy

Thanks for the added info. I dont think its rockers, because it was I should hear it with the stethescope when I place it on the valve covers. And I dont hear anything.

The knocking doesnt really go away when bringing the rpms up or under load when you start to move, you just cant hear it due to engine noise. Without an oil pressure guage I dont know how to check the oil pressure. The oil lights usually dont come on until around 4 psi.

I will check the exhaust manifolds. Just seems like the knocking is coming from the bottom of the engine.

Oh yeah, and I live in Holland, Michigan on the west side of the state. I have a great mechanic here that I have used for other vehicles, but never a land rover. I usually do most of the work myself.

I couldnt pin down the noise on mine,The engine is hollow between the 2 banks of cylinders making it a nightmare to track down knocks and squeaks

Well...I have check for exhaust leaks and cant find one. The cats are a little noisy but not the knocking that I hear. I broke out the stethescope again with a second opinion and the noise is definately coming from the bottom end. THe noise is coming right from the oil pan. The front seal is also leaking.

Has anyone replaced any bottom end parts with the engine still in the vehicle. It seems like there is enough room to drop the pan and have access to it.

Narrowed down to rod bearing. I started pulling off plug wires one at a time and when I got to the second one back on the passenger side, the knock went away. So without the combustion stroke slamming the piston down the rod bearing doesnt knock.

So am I ordering the rod bearing set (might as well do all eight while I am in there), new pan gasket, and going to replace front crank seal while I am at it. Has anyone ever done this job from under the vehicle. If so how bad a job was it? Are the rod cap nuts metric or brittish size.

Thanks for any input.
