Exclamation No A/C !!!!

My A/C hasn't worked since i bought my 96 RR 4.0 last fall. Now that it's spring i wanted to get it ready for the summer.

I checked the r-134a level and the system is charged. When I power the condensor directly it starts up and i get cold air. I didn't want to jerry rig a switch, and i don't fully understand the LR A/C system?

A couple portions of my climate control display dont work should i be looking at that, or is there some computer i should be hunting down.

Any digrams or suggestions of diagnostic procedure would help greatly.

If you are having other problems with the a/c control unit, it ,ay be safe to assume that is has or is failing. Here is a link to used heads just in case that is the problem,

is the control unit the only module that would determine that? only reason i'm asking is because with these rovers it always seems like theres a million computers between point a and point b.

Operation of the clutch is controlled by the ATC ECU.

After installation of a new ATC ECU, it must be initialized using Testbook or similar from proper operation.

To engage the compressor clutch, the ATC ECU first outputs an A/C request signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). If the ECM agrees that the compressor can be engaged, it responds with an A/C grant signal to the ATC ECU. The ATC ECU then energizes the compressor clutch via the dual pressure switch. Automatic compressor operation is then governed by the input from the evaporator temperature sensor. If the temperature of the air leaving the evaporator decreases to the point where ice may form and restrict the air flow, the ATC ECU de-energizes the compressor clutch until the temperature of the air leaving the evaporator increases again.

The ATC ECU also de-energizes the compressor clutch if the A/C OFF switch is pressed, or if the ECM withdraws the A/C grant signal (e.g. because of engine overheat or high load conditions).

If you dont have one yet, get a service manual for this truck.

Thx. Thats the kind of info i need. Which component do you think is the most common culprit?

And do you know where i can download a manual for free (if possible). I got pdf for my yamaha and bimmer, but the rover manuals seem harder to come by.
