Default Overheating...or is it? 2001 P38

Hey Guys I have a 2001 Range Rover 4.6HSE. Recently after runnin the rangie on the highway the temperature gauge seems like it has taken on a mind of its own...It will be sittin pretty at half (like normal) then it will literally jump up to overheating red warning light and all! After about a minute it drops right back down to normal. There doesnt seem to be a slow creep up to overheating or anything...just a drastic jump. Now apparently my check engine light is on...(my wifey is drivin the range today) and I will check the codes when she gets home...i was just thinking maybe it was a sensor because the jump up to overheating and back down to normal was so fast. Maybe someone has some experience with this?

Thanks in advance!!

Pete in Toronto

Loose or poor ground connections may cause the temperature gauge to read high or to flicker.

Clean up your grounds.
