p38 oil leak - Land Rovers Only

oil has been leaking from oil filter only when the engine is running on my 98 4.0. its not the oil filter... however ive heard some people say its the oil pump assembly?..any other suggestions? thanks

I just changed my oil pump assembly on my 97 P38. You can have an oil leak on the crank seal, temp/press? sensor, front cover, or the cam magnet gizmo. If you need a crank seal, I have an extra new one I will let go cheap. Good luck.

I know my main seal/crank seal is beginning to leak, so i'd definatly take it off your hands... also ive heard you need 2 special tools for that gasket..one for taking it out and one for putting the new one in? can i get around having to buy them? can you give me any pointers on taking the front cover off..any special tools etc..thanks

Boy, are you lucky... I just pulled my front cover out of the trash to see if the crank seal comes out the front or back. It just pops out the front. If that is your only leak, then you don't have to pull the front cover off.
All you have to do is:
Pull the belt and fan off
Pull the radiator/drain it first
Pull the crank pulley out/off (I used an impact gun to get bolt out)
Pop out seal, and pop new one in.
Easy...

I think the hardest part is getting the fan off. You have to hold the water pump pulley (I had to make a special tool to hold it) while you have a big ass wrench on the nut of the fan.

Doesn't look like you need any special tools to remove or replace the seal. Just make sure you push it in squarely.

You might want to replace your water pump while you are there (depending on how old it is). They don't seem to last very long on the 4.6.

Oh yeah, the seal I have was for a 97 4.6. You should check and make sure it is the same on your Rover.
