Default range rover p38 tune-up

Hello,

My range rover p38 1997 needs a tune-up as my mechanic said.

as the cost is around 700$ (tune-up and fuel injection service), I wanted to know if I could do that myself, and what I had to clean or maybe replace.

Thanks a lot for your help.

i didn't know you could tune an electronically controlled engine! if the fuel injectors are worn there's nothing for it but to replace. but if what you have is perhaps a little dirt or varnish in the system then any of a number of fuel additives (injection cleaners, octane boosters etc) will do the job. as for general engine servicing, i'd change the air filter, engine oil and filter and fuel filter. i do those as a matter of course at least once a year no matter the mileage. also check plugs and leads and replace as necessary, that's about all. You could flush the coolant if you like and take it even further if you really want to by changing all fluids (gearbox, transfer box and both differentials). But that goes beyond a routine servicing or "tune-up". Again if there is a problem with misfiring, fuel consumption, rough idle etc, it'll be because the ECU is getting bad inputs from one of many sensors. The only way to know which is to have your codes read, replace the duff sensors, clear codes and see if they come back. if they do then you have a lead on where to investigate further.

ps. you didn't say so i assumed you have a petrol engine. i don't know much about diesels but the principle should be the same.
