But other than that, I wouldn't say one is more "capable" than the other. Classics are used more often as off-road, but I believe it's because they cost less than P38's because they are generally older vehicles.
I see you're point, but I just believe that since the classic is simpler, seems to have more suspension travel (haven't looked at the numbers, but seeing two side by side) and is just overall sparser that if I were to take a range rover off-road I would, in an instant, take a classic over a P38a. Put a P38a next to a Classic and drive it up a steep rocky face or through some deep mud, I think the classic would have a much easier time with it (now this is pre 99 when the p38a had only rear traction control). This is all just in my opinion of course. Both vehicles are, of course, above any other stock vehicle when it comes to off-road ability.

My friend just bought a 97 P38a. Can't wait to get her off the road in it!

Starting in 1993, the LWB (108") was introduced along side the SWB (100"). Both base models were the county, the LWB being badged "County LWB" and the SWB just being badged "County". From 1993 - 1995 the SWB and LWB models were sold side by side. Far fewer SWB models were sold in the US though. The LWB models obviously have a bit of a handicap off-road but are still very durable, capable vehicles. The EAS might even be able to make up for the reduced breakover angle. I'm not sure.

I love RRs. Classics & P-38's. Seen some incrediblly well built-up P-38's recently. Went wheeling 2 weeks ago with two beautiful classics, very subtly but very well built-up w/ RTE dislocation cones, 31's, bumpers.... what a beautiful & unique vehicle! Wish I had some pictures to post.

Please reconsider. I am the current owner of both a 2003 Jeep Wrangler sport and a 2000 Range 4.6HSE. There is no comparision between the two, unless you are going to be a very serious off-roader. The Range Rover is awesome, and can do just about every thing the jeep can do and probably more. But the main thing to consider is that you are comparing apples to oranges, the Jeep looks cool if you need to cruise around with a convertible, and the parts are cheaper. That's it! No offense to either, but they both have questionable built quality, although you get much more bang for the buck with the used Rover. The Rover has more room, rides smoother, quicker, definitely higher on the valet factor, and has a ton of gadgets. If you can afford the maintanence costs(which can be high) then I vote Rover all the way. I do still love both the Jeep and the Rover, but the Rover is my car of choice.

Now for the tire thing. I thing you are much better off selling your tires on ebay or locally and upgrading to some bigger wheels. I have my Jeep fully decked out, lift, 33in off road tires with 18in wheels, and a ton of other stuff, and there is no way I would ever go back to the custom 15's w/33 inch tires I used to have. Granted with the bigger wheels, I can't go smashing into big boulders, but why would you punish your car that much anyway, the wheels still handle 99% of anything you throw at them. Fifteen inch wheels would degrade the look and on a newer 4.6, they would look absolutely silly. And if you start messing with the tire sizes on a newer Rover, you're asking for the check engine light to come on. If you need new wheels and tires, I could probably sell you a set of my old ones, my 18in Hurricanes from the Rover or my 33intire/15in wheel off road set from the Jeep. I have a buddy that works at Discount tire.

If you have any other questions, I'd love to help if I can. Remember, Jeeps and Rovers can peacefully exist in the same driveway.

My advice, buy a RR, keep the jeep and give it to you girl. That way when she gets stuck you can look like a hero and pull her out......lol

As far as the air suspension..stay away from it.. My parents have a 97 RR 4.6, great vehicle...... The only problem we have ever had with it is the air ride....... We tow a 30' camper all over the USA and four wheel it..... We have had great experiences in it.... I personally have a 92 RRC(range Rover Classic) I love it, it has a 2" lift and I currently have 31 x 10.50 tires... I can show you some older 4x4 pics... I need to update but my scanner is broken...Here is something to look at for now.. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/735661

I'd say go for the rover, you will love the change... I wheel with a lot of jeeps and still love them, I just perfer the rovers.

Another thing that is nicer about the RR over the jeep is that you don't get windblasted, especially if its a Daily Driver. That is what i really dont like about jeeps.
