'02 Disco II - Replacement Key - Land Rovers Only

My used Disco II came with two keys from the dealership... one the metal portion broke off the plastic housing/remote... now the plastic keyring clip on the other broke. I called the dealership to see how much a new key would cost... $217 + labor to program. Seriously. Has anyone found an alternate solution? Not even the US Government pays $217+ for a key or a hammer or a toilet seat cover.

It is unlikely the metal portion of the key broke. The key ends in a straight shaft and the shaft locks into the plastic remote. You can pry the remote apart and look at it (and replace the battery if necessary). Generally you just stick the key back into the remote or you might want to use a small spot of glue.

For an extra key, try this - have the dealer take a 99 blank (no remote) and cut it with the number on your key. This worked for me. No remote capability but it works the ignition and door locks.
