Well, for starters, i just purchased a 1999 discovery II with 61k miles, and traded in my 1996 Discovery I.
As i was driving it home after i made the purchase, i noticed a kind of whining sound. I'm wondering if its somehow related to my ACE system. if the car is sitting there idling in any gear, there is no sound. However, once you start to drive, the sound is there a little, and as you corner slowly, the sound gets louder. The sound is so quiet that anything over like 40 mph, you can not hear it (or maybe it stops at that speed? I'm thinking not...) It sounds kind of like a hydraulic/power steering whine, but when i was sitting still, i was turning the wheels back and forth and there was nothing. I don't know if the ACE system is pneumatic or hydraulic... so I'm wondering if it could be related to the roll compensation. Any advice? |

My wife's 2001 Disco has the ACE system, I too noticed the same thing when we first bought it, so I took it into the dealer. They said it was the ACE system's pump and that it was normal for it to make that sound and that nothing could be done. I do not notice the sound when turning slowly, only in faster turns. My wife is used to the subtle whine and does not bother her. I do not have the system on my 99 so it kind of bugs me when I drive hers.
If anybody knows of any cures for the noise I would be interested in knowing, but in the mean time, it appears that this is what you get with the ACE system. |

I drove my rover again tonight, and i notice it only makes the whining sound in the RPM range of around 1500 to around 2500. It almost sounds like there is a little strain on the engine.
i checked the fluid levels at the dealership, and it all looked fine, but i think i will have to check it again tomorrow when its light out. |

Again, what you describe is the same, about 1500-2500 RPM and it sounds like it pulls down on the engine just a bit, we have had the vehicle for two years and it has remained exactly the same since we bought it.

Now i feel reassured. If anyone has any input on this, or how to make it stop, or an actual reason why it makes this sound, please let me know. From what i have read, rovers seem to really love synthetic anything. would adding something synthetic to the system perhaps help the whine a little? |

My D2 developed a whine a couple of years back that the dealership told me was the ACE pump and that this whine was "normal". I noticed some months later that the whine seemed to have gone for whatever reason.
I remember someone on this forum (I am pretty sure Disco Mike) suggesting that I flush the ACE system. This might do the trick for you. ![]() |

A thought. ACE pumps can make noise, sometime as brand new. They can also make noise when there fluid is old and burned. The fluid and sometimes the ACE filter should be changed be changed every 30,000 miles, which will prevent wear and some noise.
The dealer want around $180 plus the price of a filter, apx. $65, to do this service. E-mail me and I'll walk you through how to service it for apx. $20 plus possibly a new filter, which can be done in about 20 minutes out on your driveway. Mike mikeljacobs@comcast.net |

I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but I've never heard the kind of whining you all are describing. I've got ACE, but never have a heard this.

Hi,
my 2001 ACE does the exact same thing. The pump was changed at the dealer 2 yrs ago and it still does it, under the same conditions previously mentioned. I have followed Mike's advice on changing the fluid about 3 months ago but the sound it still there (haven't changed the filter though). I have just got used to it now. What Mike is suggesting, regarding the fluid change, is great and will save both money and time. Regards |

Another thought:
Have you replaced the belt tensioner pulley? These have acertain "fame" for whining when old/worn out. I think there was even a recall involving them, but not 100% sure on that. Thanks, Carlos |

Don't remember where, but I've read quite a few times, that the filter can be cleaned by using brake cleaner, letting it evaporate, soaking it in PS oil, squeezing out that oil and repeating the oil dipping and squeezing before re-installing.
Would that work??? |
