Default 2000 DII worries

I haven't been on here much and I must say I've missed it. My 2000 disco is now my wifes daily driver- it in good hands but she's starting to think its her's?? Anyway, thats a whole different issue.

I filled it up with gas the other day and then drove it again a few days later. With only about 110 miles on the trip it used almost a half tank of gas. I thought the milage was getting worse but that was first and I hope the last for that.

It was overdue for plugs and wires and I hope that fixes some of the gas milage issues. I've been a little worried about what seems to be "tick" noise thats been getting a little worse, so I did a compression test while I was doing the plugs. 7 came back at about 155psi but #1 was only at 125psi. Thats also the same side as the tick.

So far:

New plugs and wires
SeaFoam in the intake
After the SeaFoam I changed the oil and replaced a quart with ATF (been about 50 miles and plan on changing the oil again after a 100 miles or so)
Lucas Fuel sys cleaner in the gas.

Now my tick seems to have gotten worse. Its not yet a knock or bang, just a bit louder. The lower compression is what I'm concerned about I guess. I know these can have carbon issues and that can cause some valve problems.

Any ideas on to be sure the carbon potential is gone and from there.....what I can or should I do? I'm somewhat poor at the moment so I'd like avoid the stealership but want to make sure I'm not missing something that might get more costly if I wait.

Thanks much

I think that replacing a quart with ATF is a mistake. I'd flush it now and with synthetics.

The tick is probably an exhaust leak, most likely at the y-pipe.

My discovery has at least a 20% drop in mileage when we start using winter gas up here in Canada.

Mike, thanks for taking the time to talk last night. I found a dealership locally who's getting out of B&G line and has 3 cans of the 44k left on clearance at $15 each, so I'll pick that up today. The only place I've found who has the kit was only willing to do at part of service becasue they said you need a special machine to use the intake cleaner? I'll prob. order that online but start with the 44k from the dealership for now and wait until the other stuff gets shipped for the rest.

Steph,

What do you mean by fulshing it now with Synthetics? I use full syn on every oil change but since I'm in the flushing mode and only plan on having the oil w/ the ATF sub'ed in for about 100 miles I used a store brand of syn blend so it wasn't so expensive. Tonight or tomorrow I'll be changing the oil again back the full syn. Is that what you meant?? Sorry I didn't get what you meant.

I'm not expecting great milage and I did notice that costco's gas (which I use prob a 3rd of the time) has ethynol added to it but thats like 9mpg, which seems too low.

As far as the Y-pipe- I haven't looked at it but a while back I asked a shop if the noise was an exhaust leak and the couldn't find anything. I'll double check it but it sounds like its a mechanical noise from the engine even when I'm under the hood.

Thanks again to both of you for getting back to me.

The tick is possibly due to a rocker arm steel cup that is pressed in from the factory, when the pressing comes loose the cup rotates and a "ticking" sound becomes very apparent, not overly hard to diagnose. Listen to the top of both valve covers with a stethoscope front to back and you'll probably be able to find out which bank the rocker is on.

Yep! My money is on a rocker arm steel cup.

The ticking may get slightly worse but it's not an urgent fix. So if you can live with it, just let it keep ticking.

Then when you are sick of it one day, get all the rockers replaced, as it's likely that some others are on their way out, as they could all be of the same batch. But there's no hurry to fix this problem, as it's not really going to cause any damage if no tended to long term, IMHO.

Thanks again for the input so far.

I got the oil changed, and did the compression test again.

This time #1 was at 151psi. The other ranged between 162-168psi. Improvement is good I guess. The plugs looked fine and all looked the same, of coarse I don't know how much you tell after only about 90miles on them.

I put the BG44k in, but I've only driven 15 or 20miles, and I ordered the 4 part kit which won't be here until after the holidays most likely.
