Im new to forums but thought i could get good advice here. Maybe you guys can help out a newbee. I have a 2001 Disco SE7 with 100,000 Miles and just dropped $3,000 with a mechanic to get engine problems fixed, smog, etc. Its running great from engine stand point now and previous head gasket job, Battery, Fuel Pump, Water Pump, Cooling System, Clutch Fan, Thermastat, etc. Now i need some advise for other small issues i am having.
The Disco looks cool but does not have ideal setup going for it as far as offroading and highway ride. I think it has a 2" Body lift on it with Goodyear P275 55/R20 tires. I know i should have a OME 2" Suspension lift and 32" BFG AT with 16 or 18" rims ideally.
Here are the problems i am trying to solve.
1) The entire Truck shakes and riddles at 70MPH and over. To the point you feel like it will fall apart. I can't tell if its the tires and wheels that aren't right, the front drive Drive Shaft (Which I have read should be upgraded), The rotofelx joint which i did replace. Essentially i would like to get the shake fixed since everyone drives over 70MPH on California Freeways.
2) When driving on highway the windows shake violently and wind and water will come through the door in a car wash or on road. I had thought Discos had sealed doors that were capable of driving through rivers without water getting in. Thats definitely not the case with mine lol. I looked for a way to adjust the driverside window top that shakes but can't figure out how to align, can i reseal the door and make it ware and wind proof?
3) When i go over speed bumps i hear big thumps. I have the airbag back suspension on the SE7 is this normal?
Next.
My intent is to use the car to drive on road trips to camping, skiing, mountains, etc. And do some trail riding in the mountains or sand dunes. So i would like a nicely balanced truck capable off road but still able to drive on highway for a few hour road trip. I would like to make the cab as quite as possible and the ride smoother.
What do you suggest to do with my current set up? Get new tires and rims or keep the ones i have and upgrade tires? Get a OME suspension lift or keep what i have, or do both? Is that possible without alternating steering or would it be unbalanced? Whats is my ideal suspension and tire size and can i work with anything i already have?
What other things should i do or keep an eye on to make sure the truck remains reliable and doesn't break down in the middle of a road trip or trail?
Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated. I attached a pic to show some types of trails i go on.
