How mechanical are you, how many miles on the engine and have you been needing to add coolant recently.
In the mean time do not drive it any more till this is fixed.

Given your description, it might be the fan clutch.

If I have one in stock, $100-shipped

i am very mechanical when i have the time. 155k miles
i am not driving the Disco and i have not had any coolant problems prior to the incident.
she drove it till the engine started knocking and shut it down (so i was told)
i had it towed and drained the oil and coolant to see if anything was mixed and there is not. i replaced oil and coolant and let truck idle for 2 hours- still no mixing of fluids no overheating running fine. drove less than one mile and temp gauge shot to top. then replaced t-stat and flushed system. again idled for an hour no issues and drove 1 mile and same overheating

i would i confirm the clutch is bad
i have read after the engine is warm and then shut off the fan should not spin freely
if so, then my clutch is bad since the fan spins freely after shut down

from on=line reading (dangerous sources) I was testing today to see if the clutch is bad, i suspect it is. after shutting down the fan spins freely by hand. i know my electric fan is shot, tested and have voltage to the unit and then tried moving it and it is frozen.

let me know if you think this is the problem.

again idling in the driveway the temp is fine as soon as i drive around the block a couple of times it overheats. come back and let it cool down and do it again same results. watching temp gauge closely so i dont over do it.

thanks for the advice
