Default 2003 Discovery II (Electical Issues?)

Hello,

I'm new to the LAND ROVER arena and thought this would be a good place to make friends who might know the answers to the questions I might have.

I'm actually having two issues:

1) The horn on my car does not work. I've had the fuse changed out but it still fails to make a sound. I'm not exactly sure what I should do at this point. Any ideas?

2) The front passenger door does not respond to the key or the unlock button found inside the car. It seems as if the lock is getting a constant (LOCKME) signal. I can open it from the inside which will get it to unlock and use the key and the button to lock the door but it won't unlock unless its manually done.

Any Ideas?

Check and see if you have power to the horn when you try and honk, could be the dual horn unit has failed.
As for the door lock, if you put yor ear next to the door and a finger on the lock button, can you feel or hear anything when you try the locks? If not, you will need a new lock actuator to correct the problem.

I'm not sure how to check whether power is going to the horn or not. The horn is non responsive when I hit the horn buttons on the steering wheel. How expensive or difficult would it be to change out the horn unit?

I'm going to try to change out the lock actuator BUT I'm not exactly sure how to take the panel off the door. Can you refer me to a place where I can get step by step instructions? Thanks for your help!

Default Rave

RAVE CD, I don't have the link. I'm sure someone will post it. Easy, screws behind door handle. There are plastic clips around the frame. Snap one off at a time. Don't forget speaker wires, uphook those as well.

Just go buy a $10 12 volt test probe, you can use it to test both the horn and lock actuator. Don't make the mistake of just throwing parts at your truck till you verify exactly what is wrong.

Hmm good idea. Nobody has mentioned the Volt test probe. I'll give that a shot first. I'm going to have to test it tommorow. Thanks alot Mike. I'll post again once I've tried that. Hopefully I won't have to actually chnage out parts.

Thanks to you too Brian.

Hey Mike and fellow Rover Owners.

I didnt do the light check but I did put my ear to the door and I can hear the clicking in the door. The passenger door on the same side is starting to show the same symtoms. The door will lock once it's open but it won't open once its locked.

I think it may be best to just change the parts out. What do you think Mike?
I was also wondering, do I need to buy rover specific actuators or can I just buy some generic ones and install and use them?

I'm not a great mechanic by any means and was wondering, is this a hard task? I'm thinking about purchasing the parts and paying someone to do it for me.

I went to the website and tried to use the software and files but am having a hard time viewing them.

** Wipers ** Can I buy wipers from a Autozone or do I have to buy these from Rover as well?

The horn... I'll get to after the locks=P

Default Finally

I've been out of the country and sorts and wasn't able to work on my rover. I managed to get the door open and peeled the plastic away but I can't seem to figure out how to get the lock actuator component out of its socket. I removed the screws and it's loose but it doesnt seem like it'll be able to come out due to the size. It seems that the white portion comes off from the black plastic housing which has the 2 wheels that is supposed to turn to unlock the door and open it from the outside. Is that piece the actuator or is it the piece that you look at from the inside? Are these 2 pieces supposed to come apart?

I also ran into another issue. While I attempted to take the component out of the door the little metal piece that connects the actuator to the outside door handle fell into a grove inside the door and I cannot seem to find it. It may be easier to purchase one at this point. Anyone know where I can acquire that little Lshape piece?

Default Bad actuator

JC,

Mine did the same. The doors would lock but not unlock. I needed a new door lock actuator (dealer installed, and messed up the handle position, I'd do it myself looing back). If that metal piece fall off it might be a bear to find and get back on. I have never changed an actuator so I'm not in a position to give advice. Here is the part your looking for. Call to double check it's the right side of your Rover. I have read other post on dweb.com that go into more detail about your issue. You might want to check there. Do a seach for door actuator. Good luck!

I think you can, but it has to be ordered. Advance Auto Parts also has it but needs to be ordered. Napa may actually stock them, but the are close to dealer price.

I've been searching for wipers, but have held off on purchase. I found they range from $25 to 28$ per wiper.

Mine are pretty well shot so I will be getting them soon.

Also the piece that fell inside the door, is it metal? A small telescopic magnet may be able to retrieve it. Either that or just remove the entire door panel.

I've got some advice form a person who works on cars, never a rover though. He let me borrow some tools that will allow me to get the pieces without having to take the door apart. I'm going for round 2 tommorow! Wish me luck!
