Default 40 - 45 mph steering wheel shake

Hey everyone, my wife drives a 2002 SE7 with only 54,000 miles on it. When it is running around 40 - 45 mph the steering wheel shakes. It doesn't shake very badly, maybe about .5 inch to 1 inch either way. Any ideas out there. We've owned it since 45,000 miles and we never had the wheels balanced/aligned. Not sure exactly what all was done before that. We are headed in to have it serviced (oil change, etc.) this coming Friday and I was curious if anyone out there knew what could be wrong with it shaking.

On another note, I posted about the passenger side AC in her car not working a while ago. Funny thing, if we turn on the Rear AC to the vehicle the passenger side AC works like a dream, otherwise it doesn't blow cold air at all. We'll have the dealer take a look at that too.

Can't say for sure, but @ 58000 I had the same shake @ 45-50MPH. Just got the Disco and thought, great the rumors are true and thought I had a major problem coming. First thing I did was take it to Sam's for a balance and rotation.... vibration completely gone. Think it was $3 a tire. From what I understand, you don't want to miss your routine balance/ rotations... all wheel drive is ruff on the front tires

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Looks like I'll just see if the dealership can rotate and balance while it is in this Friday. Let's hope that is all that can be wrong with it. I don't want to have to go through all that U-joint stuff I've read about on this forum.

Have you replaced your steering stabilizer yet, with your mileage, it could be warn out and not stopping the wabble.
If it hasn't been replaced and the tire balance didn't correct your problem then you might want to order a Old Man Emu stabilizer to fix the problem.

Thanks from me too. I'm getting the tires rotated today 61800miles. If wobble doesn't go then new steering stabilizer it is.

steering damper is next on my list... steering wheel doesn't seem as "stiff" as it used to be.

Has anyone had an alignment done to their Disco... is it common around 60,000??? My steering wheel is just a bit off center... but things like that drive me crazy.

Is there a reason to choose the OME over Bilstein? Rover connection is under the impression that a Bilstein Steering Stabilizer does not exist for the DII when its listed on Bilsteins site. I plan to upgrade the whole suspension eventually to Bilsteins since I spend most of my time on road.

How long do the stock shocks last? Mine seem to be holding out pretty good at 62000 miles. No excessive bouncing that I can think of. I assume its the same for the DII. If you hit a bump and it does not stop jumping after 3 jumps they are shot???
