My indy says all L Rovers at 100K miles should change transmission fluid and clean the screen. Looking at Rave CD it looks like all you do is remove the oil sump, remove the oil takeup tube, take out the screen (filter) and clean it with a no-lint cloth, then put it back together. Need some O rings and a new gasket for the oil sump but no need for a new filter. Is this fairly easy and can I do it without jacking up the truck?
Looking at OEMParts.com I find a problem with the english and american terminology. The Rave CD calls it an oil sump gasket but all I see is an oil pan gasket - do not believe this is the right gasket. Then I see a transmission pan gasket; could this be the right gasket for the oil sump and why does it cost so much? Unable to find the O rings. Any ideas? Also the new gasket for the plug is about $6 - way overpriced; do I really new a new gasket for the drain plug and is it an aluminum gasket or fiber? Thanks for your help. Need to do this on three trucks. |

If you read your owners manual, you don't need to replace the filter, only at the 30,000 mile service.
Just do a drain and fill thru the pan. When filling, fill it till the pan is full, start the engine, shift from drive to reverse 2 time then back to park and while still running fill the pan one more time. Mike |

Mike - all three trucks have between 110K and 130K miles each and I purchased them used so do not know if the filter has ever been cleaned or the trans fluid replaced. Per the Rave CD it looks like you do not replace the screen (which I believe is referred to as the oil filter) ever; just clean it. So with this update on mileage do you still think I am wasting time trying to clean the trans filter?

The first service would have been done by the dealer, a free service and that was the only filter change it got.
You don't remove and try to clean the filter, just do a drain and fill, unless you just want to spend the money and then only replace the filter with a new Rover filter. Mike |
