I've read all the threads about "can i remove ace" and "can i just get a smaller belt." We'll today, i talked to a local LR mechanic and they informed me that ACE cannot be disabled with testbook. So after hearing that the ECU cannot be reset to deactivate ACE I had a thought.
Why can we not just swap our ecu out for one that came on a standard D2? Most of us convert to coils anyway so it would already have sls disabled. ACE would of never been on the other ecu. Would this not work? Other than the ecu swap, it would only require the removal of the ACE system and sway bars off of a standard junkyard d2. Am I wrong? Has this been covered? If so, im sorry. I couldnt find it. |

I agree, why are you wanting to remove the ACE and the SLS. The ACE already gives you more articulation then standard sway bars, you can already out run other Discos out on a dirt road full of curves with your ACE. Why the SLS?

Hey guys. I want to get rid of ACE only because of the whining. It is terrible and yes I have serviced it twice already in the last year. I've tried the synthetic ps fluid with lucas with no change. I just tried it with the cheap stuff with no change. On normal straight line drives I cannot hear the system at all..but once i turn the steering wheel the awful whining starts...Usually in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range is works. As with th SLS, it is already removed. I converted to coils and love it. I know i get better articulation with ACE, however, I do drive my truck on the street more often than I off road so the noise is heard a lot. With the stock sway bars I would not have to hear the whining and i can disconnect them off road.
Do you think i could switch the ecu's out to rid myself of the whine? |

Have you ever replaced the ACE filter, you may be building up too much back pressure, or the other more likely possibility is you are one of thos people who got stuck with a noisy ACE pump. My pump has nearly 95,000 miles on it and has never made a sound. You might consider replacing the pump with a new or used unit.

hey disco_mike. I have actually considered the filter. At one point, i removed the filter and left it out for a few minutes to see if it made a difference...It did not what so ever. I do believe i got stuck with a loud pump...id hate to spend the 500 bucks on a pump just to have it do it all over again..i've actually considered making a shield of some sort that can sorta cover the entire pump. Maybe a piece of sheet metal shaped to cover the pump that i can rivet to the plastic shroud that covers the the ps pulley and ace pulley. That might conceal the whine and confine it to the engine bay instead of my ear driving down the road. lol..
So the bottom line is that swapping ecu's is not an option to rid myself of ACE? I have access to a used ecu and sway bars. I have to make a trip to the mechanic soon to diagnose my 3 amigo that sometimes appear for no reason so if the ecu would need to be reset or something, i could do it then.. |

I don't have first hand experience with the ECU swap, just repeating what I remember from a thread on Dweb. They can be swapped, but it's not as simple as plugging in a new one. You might want to do a search there to learn more.
Good Luck. |

well guys...I have effectively disabled my ACE system. It was as easy as swapping the fan belt for one that was for a non-ace vehicle. I do have the small ace warning light at the bottom of my instrument cluster, but a little black electrical tape behind the gauge face will hide that without any sign. Also, the vehicle doesn't handle any worse than it did before. I do have RTE springs so maybe the added stiffness is helping me. I'm just happy that the whine is finally gone. For once, I can hear myself think while i drive.

so....
you changed the belt so it does not turn the pump? did you add a front sway bar or anything like that, or do you simply have a dead ACE linkage? I would assume that without any sway bars, the truck would corner like crap. Can the stock DII sway bars be added and the ACE components removed?

honestly, it doesn't handle any worse than before. i am quite surprised. I borrowed a friends old belt from his non ace rover figuring i would try to disable it the easy way first(pump in place but doesn't turn). I expected every light on the dash to light up and it handle like crap. Well, only one little light comes on and it handles pretty damn good. I think it might have something to do with my RTE springs though. Stiffer than stock. My buddy completely removed his sway bars on his non ace rover and it's surprisingly stable too. He also has RTE springs.
if mine ever gets loose and swirly, ill try to swap out my buddies old sway bars and get rid of the ace sway bars. ill prolly have to leave the valve block under the passenger door in place though, as it has all the electrical connections and will prolly screw up the computer by removing. After hearing my 00 d2 without the whining ace pump, i feel like i have a new ride. Very happy! |
