Default air filter recomendation?

2001 DII, will be changing oil this weekend, truck has 70k, i use o.e.m
rover oil filters, live in payson, az 5000ft.elev. temp around
mid 30's to mid 60's ,with mornings at mid teens to 20's. what is the perfered
oil grade to use? it gets 83 mile one way commute 3 times a week on highway. back to my original ?? what air filter is perfered? i don't want
to set off alarms so should i go to stealership get o.em, stealer is 86 miles away. or will autozone have a filter that i can use with no poblems.

btw, any DII owners live in north az, payson has some killer snow wheelin

Stick with the paper filter. With regards to the oil, as you have cold weather, select an oil around 5W-30 or 10W-30.

Well - since you asked...

I like the K&N air and oil filters. I have seen a pretty detailed demo of their performance and it is AMAZING how well both trap dirt. The air filter allows for great air flow and is clean-able. You can actually HEAR the air getting sucked into the motor due to the improved flow. All the while it is trapping more dirt than paper.

Same goes for the K&N oil filter - great flow with the super filter action!

Oil = I always run synthetics. Mobil 1 to be specific. It is more costly, but I have run in three vintage race cars and the stuff just performs very well. Nice bit of peace of mind, for me at least.

Cheers!

Oh Oh! Looks like the K&N filter debate has risen from the dead.
REFERJOHN: By paper filter I mean't the OEM one thats already fitted in your vehicle. As your dealer is some distance from you, get hold of an air gun and carefully blow out any dust from it and replace it. This should suffice until you are next in the vacinity of your dealer, then purchase 2 filters and keep one as a future spare.

I too would go with the paper type air filter. I used the K&N for 80K miles and didn't see any benefit. If you can't get to your dealer you could use a Wix brand air filter. I can't remember the part number but your local Napa or O'Reilly's should have it or be able to get it for you.

As far as oil filters go, if you can't get to your dealer to buy the OEM oil filter try the K&N oil filter. I believe the part number is 3001, which is a little longer than the stock oil filter and works great. I would not use any other oil filter besides the OEM or K&N.

Rover sells too many replacement MAF's because of the K&N air filter, go to Auto Zone and buy one of their standard air filters. As fot the oil filter, the K&N 3001 is a great filter to use.

WOW! Perhaps I have been lucky - but in 12 years and nine cars all using K&N I have had nothing but good luck & have never needed to worry about carrying a spare or the paper getting wet. If anyone has empirical data that PROVES K&N air filters have issues, I would love to see it.

WIX oil filters are top shelf too! Very good quality.

I have you K&N filters on other vehicle also but the Bosch MAF is too sensitive to oil residue and will fail more times then not. The older MAF's would handle them better but not always.

No empirical data here but after having the K&N air filter for 82+K miles I had to replace my MAFS. Coincidence? I think not...

No but really, I didn't see any real improvement using the K&N other than I didn't have to buy a paper filter. Just clean and re-oil the K&N. I think the problem that people are having with the K&N air filter is using too much oil when re-oiling.

I may be shooting myself in the foot from things that I have said in the past... but about a month or so ago, I replaced my K&N with a paper filter.. since then my gas mileage has gone down from an average of 12mpg to 9mpg. I can't say for sure that its the filter that has done it.. but I'm going to clean the K&N and throw it back in and see if it increases. I'll report back with my findings one day..

I have had to replace my MAF twice in 50k, so I got rid of the K&N, and went back to a paper filter. I would prefer to run the K&N, but I'm tired of buying MAF's

When I changed back to paper from the K&N, I didn't loose any mileage, still hitting 16.5 on the highway as long as I stay under 70MPH, thats with 4:11;s and 265's. There has to be something else hitting you in the gas tank.

Other than swapping a hella 4000 fog light for a hella 4000 euro beam, that was all I did that week! Like I said though, I gotta see it for myself and see if that was the actual case.. I used to be able to get around 230 miles [city] out of 20 gallons.. now I'm getting closer 190 miles.
