Question Alignment specs wear out tires?

I recently had my front end aligned because I got new tires and the ones that were on it this winter when I bought my D2 were badly worn on the inside of the front tires. The mech said the LR specs on alignment were .17 for toe, slightly pointing the tires outward and wondered if that was why the tires wear on the inside. He set the front end to .14 and told me to check around and bring it back for a redo if neccessary.

What's the reason for outward pointing tires? Anyone with spec alignment having tire wear problems?

Not sure if my truck has had a alignment in it's life so far [as i am the second owner] but i suspect that it is set up to factory specs....no excesive tire wear. The out ward toe angle will give more directional stability [in other words allow the vehicle to drive straighter ]...gives a bit better turn in ability. They will always tell you that toe is not a tire wearing angle [not really true but].......

How were your camber specs??? if the tires were worn to the inside i would be looking at them first.....

My camber was dead on factory specs at .20

One good indicator for you is the steering wheel, if it is off center then you have either hit the tie rod or your toe setting is out and needs to be corrected.

wrong,

two adjustments, front toe and steering angle.

front toe can be on and still pull because of steering angle.

likewise it will go down the road straight but wear tires like a bastard.

camber cant be adjusted. hell you can use a piece of string to adjust toe.

oh and only the independant suspension vehicles can have the other adjustments set.

oh and camber wears tires, caster doesnt but does cause a pull.
toe wears tires but it goes out almost all the time. rarely can you find a vehicle that you set the toe on thats not off on an independant suspension vehicle like an LR3

I stand corrected, I thought there was only the one.

Alignment specs are TOW OUT = minus 0 degree, 10 minutes which means a tow IN of 0.17 degrees. The track rod adjusts tow-in - the one behind the axle.

I have to confess my complete ignorance when it comes to alignment angles. I've been doing a little reading on it though. I trusty my guy - alignments are the fattest part of his business. I think I misunderstood the direction of the toe.

Wait 'n' see...
