Long block, rebuilt - can be had for $2500 - $3000 if you try really hard to find the right deal and do the swap yourself otherwise, add $1200+/-.

Which seems out of line when you will pay that much $1700 -$2,200 or less with labor for headgaskets plus, all the other stuff a 99 DII needs from time to time.

A new 4.0 short block is selling a DAP for $3700, 4.6 for $4000.
Depending on what it wrong with his, a used engine, if bought close buy with no shipping would be the way to go.

Sounds like I would be going in the wrong direction. Still on the hunt for my '99 Disco II. To your point DD2, doesn't seem worth given all of the other routine things I would need to address throughout the life of the truck. Thanks for the info guys and gal. :-)

Go nuts and figure out how to put in a proper 'Merican V8! 302, 351, 350. Whatever, they all rock. And they cost, like, $50 to buy a new one. Heck, a whole new 'Merican engine is cheaper than an air filter!
