Default Brakes '00 Disco II

I own a 2000 Discovery II. I had the brake pads replaced by the dealer a couple of years back--around 45K miles. Six months ago, the dealer said my pads needed to be replaced and rotor needed to be turned. Having driven heavy vehicles most of my life I am surprised that brakes would go so quickly. I held off as the brakes appeared to be working fine. I am now at 87K miles and the brakes have started to squeal.
Is it normal for Disco II brakes to wear so quickly?
How many miles should I expect to get on a set of pads?
What are good and reliable replacement pads and inexpensive source for pads?

I think dealers get bonus points for doing brake jobs.. everytime I go in they tell me i need brakes.

Either get another mechanic to look at it, or take the tire off yourself and take a look. www.dap.com, www.atlanticbritish.com, www.roversnorth.com all sell cheaper alternatives.

It is not uncommon to have a DII go thru pads at that mileage, my first set was gone by 30K.
Face it, you have a heavy truck with small brakes.

x2....on DAP, good prices....I would go with DBA brake pads and rotors. x2.....on heavy truck, also keep in mind that the TC system uses the breaks and if its used a lot that will lead to extra wear.

I would agree with Josh, DBA rotors are great, but they don't make pads. I tried a couple of different pads with my DBA's and found the Kevlar pads from Atlantic British work best for me.
Don't forget to do a complete brake fluid flush when doing the brakes, it will help give you a firmer pedal.

I found that although EBC rotors are second rate, their Kevlar pad is nice. DBA rotor, EBC pads... nice combo.

Sounds strange.......never heard an LR dealer suggest "turning" rotors before.

I saw that post also and it is a hugh mistake to turn Rover rotors. Someone got the wrong end of the stick having this done, the alloy is too soft and the rotors are too this to turn.
When it is time for brakes, if you have a little metal left with no pulsation when stoping, use the rotors one more time with new pads and plan on replacing them on the next brake job somewhere down the road.

I am 3K miles into my EBC "Green Stuff" so far. DYI ...new rotors and new pads all around. It really does haul this Disco down. I am quite happy with it so far.
