Default Changing Power Steering fluid/adding Lucas Additive

How hard is this to do? Do you have to change the fluid before adding the additive? I'm sure you do.

I was looking through the rave cd and I see them performing a pressure check but i don't see the steps for actually changing the fluid. Or is it that simple?

I'm trying to get rid of what i think is the PS whine i keep hearing about.

Help. Such a newbie it's a crime

Pump it out and just get a quality fluid. Why the Lucas snake oil?

You can pull the low pressure return line and let it drain, but that can be quite a mess, or you could use a hand pump, like a turkey baster, pump ouy all the fluis, refill it, start the engine and turn full left and right twice, shut it off, pump out the fluid and refill again, repeating three times. On the last fill up, use the snake oil, Lucas and top off.
You use more fluid this way but there is no mess on the ground.

A turkey baster works very well.

You can also pick up a 12v oil pump from JC Whitney, ebay, and most marine supply stores pretty cheap. I wanted a 12v fluid pump that was a little more heavy duty and had its own waste oil container attached (for changing the oil on a boat). I bought about $40 worth of parts and built one myself. It was very easy and took about 45 minutes to do- if you're interested let me know and I can get you the details on how to do it. These things are so handy to have around for this sort of stuff. You can pump anything except fuel with them.

thanks guys. I didn't know if a flush meant emptying completely and cleansing with something. So basically I'm just sucking out the old and replacing with the new. Excellent.

From reading the boards, it's seems like that's what everybody uses. Is there something better?

Some find that switching to a synthetic p/s fluid is enough to help maintain our p/s systems over regular p/s fluid, me, I toss some in for good luck.

I think Mike hit it on the head. Use Synthetic, its not that expensive and add the Lucas for good luck. Lucas will will help condition things a bit and although some people claim its overrated- I've never seen anything claiming it will do any harm.

I changed the power steering fluid in my 95 RR 4.0 today. I used 2 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and a suction gun. Just kept sucking it out and refilling, using the on/lock/lock/off method. The old fluid was dirtier than I thought it was going to be, but I got all of it out.

The wheel seems easier to turn now.

Don't they seem to drive so much better after every little service you perform?

If you have a whine you could just try changing the old fluid for new GM fluid that Rover recommends, it might fix it...
