Default Crankshaft Pulley Puller

Is there any other way to lock down the crankshaft pulley or another tool besides the one mentioned in the rave manual?

Would one of those universal belt tools work? The one that can be used to remove oil filters and is a large belt/strap. They look kinda weak and I'm not sure if it'll be strong enough to break the center crankshaft bolt loose.

I haven't found any place that rents them yet and really do not wanna buy one.

Does anyone know what the bolts size is for that tool?

Looks like Sears has couple different types of them. Has anyone tried these?

Drop the pan and put a block of wood between one of the counterweights and the block. Whatever you do, stay away from the front cover, a friend of mine busted his front cover trying to remove the crank bolt.

The pulley bolt requires a 15/16" socket.

These type probably would work best, this one is a chinese model so I have no idea if it would hold or not:

1901 Camshaft Pulley Holder Remover Puller Wrench Tool: eBay Motors (item 250639976709 end time Jun-25-10 20:21:06 PDT)

I'm not sure what other universal ones would work on the crank pulley. It's been a while since I took my front cover off. The size is 24mm / 15/16".

Does anyone know this size of the bolt that the holding tool uses? If I can get those 2 bolts in or at least 1, then I could lock it down with that.

Otherwise I may try that belt style tool or try to block it with the wood. The oil pan is already out so I could easily do it.

Do you have a second set of hands? If so you can use the larger craftsman strap wrench. Have someone hold it from underneath and you loosen from above. My second set of hands was my pregnant wife (she did not have enough strength to turn the wrench so she ended up on the ground underneath the truck, yeah she's a keeper) so it is not that difficult.

LOL

I don't think it's hard. I'm just looking for some ideas for tomorrow when I go at it.

Thanks you to all who gave some input.

I made a holder tool but it was a PITA to use and I ended up pulling the radiator and using my rattle gun. Others have successfully jammed their breaker bar on the chassis member and spun the engine. I have added some pictures below of how I made mine _ 2 sliding parts (to get enough length to rewach the side member to brace it) and a ring to support the bar across the crank and hold tension against the bolts _ as i remember 8mm by 1.5 (I can check in the morning) as is always the case the one picture with the bolt in it is out of focus.

I have also used PT's block of wood, works just great but I braced mine from the floor to the crank rather than the block sidewall
cheers

I just changed my crank seal the other day.

Broke the bolt loose using the starter.

The harder part was tightening it.

I pull the bottom cover plate on the bottom of the bell housing, the one with the 3 small bolts.
Put a small prybar into one of the slotted holes in the flexplate.
Used a ratchet strap to hold it in place (since I was by myself and had no one to hold it for me) to the frame after rotating to crank to load it up.
Worked like a charm!

The hardest part is trying to get the rubber plug on the drivers side back in the oil pan, I pulled when looking for a good place to hold the flexplate!

I messed with that bitch for 1/2 hour before I gave up for the night.
And one got any ideas?

Or maybe I'll just forget it, the one on the other side has been missing since I got the truck anyway with no ill effects.

Tell me about it. Those things are a pain. I have both out.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll be going after the pulley shortly.

The block of wood did the trick. I couldn't find a piece of 2x4 so I used an old brush that was a thick piece of wood. It worked perfect.

I did try the belt/strap wrench, but I snapped it.
