Default Disco 2 Front drive shaft questions

I posted this on Sollihul as well but wanted to get as much info as I can.

I read on on this site that I could "have a shop rebuild" my front drive shaft instead of replacing it. I wish I had a side by side comparison so I could know what needs to be "rebuild" to make the shaft serviceable.

And if it requires a shop, what exactly am I asking that shop to do with my existing drive shaft?

Does anyone have any tips about this?

Having them put new, servicable ujoints on it. Check out Tom Wood's land rover page to see what they are doing to them: http://www.4xshaft.com/Landrover.html

Thanks for the reply.
I just broke down and ordered the one from British Pacific. It was on sale today/yesterday.

All the shop needs to do is rebuild the double cardon joint, constant velocity joint, which basicly means to remove and replace both u-joints with serviciable joints, check and replace the center ball if needed and put it back together.
You should also buy 2 jerks, one for each drive shafts slip sleeve, install them and lube them.

Sorry to ask a silly question, but what are jerks. I was checking on prices to rebuild my driveshaft, and my mechanic has never heard of them. It was also an awkward moment with the smirks I got. Please enlighten

Not Jerks...Zerks

Zerks: grease fittings

I would imagine they did smirk at the shop

Dan

BTW: When I did mine, I also replaced the u-joint on the rear of the front shaft.

Mike,

I have wondered about the addition of the zerks for the spline (slip sleeve) on mine. Wondering if it could possibly cause balance issues.

I have seen how small some of the little pieces of metal welded on for balance are, and it seems that a zerk is not much less mass (and it hangs out more).

Just a thought.

Peace,

Dan

Called Grease Nipples in the UK

I did notice when I replaced my front shaft (after it broke on the Double Cardon) that there is a spot for a grease nipple on the shaft

Might be worth installing one to grease the shaft then remove it to maintain factory balance

Actually, that is what is what it says in the workshop manual when I looked it up.

Install, grease, then remove.

Or, you can run the flat zerk that fills with a very small adpter, they are the same size as the plug from the factory and will not cause a balance problem. Full size zerks stand a good chance of being torn off when out wheeling.
