My Disco TD5 has done 86000 miles, and is 4-and-a-half years old. Over the last few weeks, I've been noticing a rumbling noise coming from the front end on cornering (worse when cold, eases off but still there after a few miles). There's also a small amount of play (just) when I rock the front wheels at standstill. It (to me) all points like wheel bearings failing.
Has anyone else seen this at these mileages? Also, I looked at the web, and it appears that there is a complete hub assembly, priced at £180-£240 per side, the bearings are not seperate! Can anyone offer any advice? I'm not keen on a £500 bill (looks as though it may be best left to the garage, as may be too much for my home mechanic facilities/abilities). |

I have just replaced the nearside hub on my 99MY DII. It was making a rumbling noise which started at speeds above 45mph. When jacked up there was no play in the bearing but sounded really rough when you spun the road wheel.
If you only here the noise on cornering then it could be your CV joint rather than a wheel bearing. Do you get the noise on left and right hand corners?? Where are you feeling the play when you rock the wheels?( could this be a track rod end issue??) Graeme. |
