I lost the coolant a couple weeks back on my 2000 Disco with 67K miles and had new head gaskets put on. They machined the heads to spec. and rebuilt it. Drove it 400 miles with no problems and then had the same issue. First time it was like a milkshake from coolant/oil mix. This time it has a trace of coolant in the oil, but I have lost enough coolant to peg the gage and cause it to overheat. It shows no signs of coolant loss under the vehicle or out the tailpipe. The shop that fixed it is reputable (a friend of mine is the owner) and I trust them 100%, but they are not sure what may be wrong this time around. I'm concerned it make be in the block. I need opinions for my next step. Thanks.

Need to do a pressur test on the coolant system, then check each plug, one at a time to see what cylinder is still leaking. Were both the heads and the block checked for cracks?
You may have dropped a cylinder sleeve, if so you have very few options, some people say they can pin the sleve but the majority replace the block. Mike |

If you have a dropped liner and plan on keeping your truck, upgrade your engine to the 4.6 V8. Have a friend who upgraded his 4.0 in his 99 D2 to a 4.6 with an upgraded cam after he dropped a liner, he loves it.

hate to be bad guy but when the oil and coolant mixes its already too late. headgaskets wont fix the problem. and trust me we dont have that issue unless its a block issue.

Here in the UK machine shops are using top hat liners that sit in a machined step at the top of the block, seems to work very well, saves scrapping the block. It also means the head gasket gets to seal against the top of the liner so any coolant making its way up the back of the liner can get no further.
I did a 94mm bore Rover block like this about 2 years ago,it looked "correct" when I built it and has been fine ever since. When I was researching a supplier for the liners a trade contact who builds drag engines here in the UK pointed me to a couple of places in the US.I think one of them was called Ross Pistons, they def did stepped liners so I know you can source them in the States. The only problem is the time the car is off the road, its not a ten minute job ! (plus its not a 10 dollar fix) |
