Default Disco II ticking noise.

Hi there friends. I have searched around the posts and have found some insightful information on this noise but no real troubleshooting guide to diagnose the problem.

I have this ticking sound that comes from my Disco II with the Bosch Engine. I have checked the manifolds for leaks but this really sounds like a "tick tick tick"
Is it possible for an exhaust leak at the manifold to sound so much like a metal to metal "tick?"
It increases in frequency as RPMs go up and I have tried the old tube in the ear and poke around to see where it is coming from with no luck.

Second question is: What is the troubleshooting procedure to go through and is there a difinitive test for the slipped cylinder lining? (worst case scenario).

Third Question:
What is the best way to test for a bad rocker shaft or mal adjusted lifters?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have 100k on the clock
Oil changed every 3000 miles
No misfire codes so I think the valves are OK

Thanks so much in advance for your expertise.
Ryan

Don't assume that the valves are ok because there are no codes. De-carbon the engine with seafoam or GM top end cleaner or something similar. I bet it's the early beginning of sticky/carbon valve syndrome. The up-side is that the de-carbon procedure will cause exhaust smoke that will also identify any exhaust leaks easily.

You might want to do an engine flush to cut the sludge and laquer build up inside the engine. Then do a good de-carbon along with a good t/body cleaning. If all goes well this may be the cure.
Don't start bring a bunch of bad Rover Karma on your self worrying about the sleeves and Rockers.
Get the engine cleaned out good and see what changes.

Default Oil Level is good

The oil level is full, and as a precaution I upped my oil changes to every 500 miles in hope that it would clean anything out that was in the valves.
So far I at Oil change number 1.
Now and previously with Mobil 1 synthetic.
I did get an O2 sensor fault today but I have 100,000 miles on the current ones, so I am going to replace them.
I am also going to try the seafoam and check for exhaust leaks at the same time.
Thanks for all the help, I will keep you posted.
Thanks for the advice discomike, I always think the worst and I have to keep that rover karma on my side!

So that tick isn't a normal noise as I've been told? I've had some sort tick noise for quite a while- always change the oil 3-3500mile m-1 synth. I've used seafoam in the intake and with the oil but didn't seem to make any difference with that noise.

I'm overdue for wire and thought I'd replace the valve cover gaskets at the same time- Anything to look for (besides just cleaning) that might point to future problem while I'm in there?

Alot of people say it is a normal Rover click, which is not always the case. I would suggest a good HD engine flush and watch the oil filters you use, don't use some of the cheaper, FRAM type, their valving is not always compatiable with our Rovers engine.
Try using a Mobil 1 or a K&N 3001 oil filter after you flush the engine. If the noise persists then it may be time to pull the top off your engine and visually inspect the rockers and lifters.

Default Seafoamed the truck

I seafoamed my disco II twice yesterday, and right after the tick changed tempo for a little while.
Instead of a tick...tick...tick it changed tempo to a tick........tick...tick........tick and seemed to decrease in frequency but then came back after driving for a little while.
It is most prevalent at idle.
I did not get the "smoke screen" that everyone talks about from the seafoam.
Should I repeat the process? And what is the best way to flush the engine?
I also checked for exhaust leaks and foud none.
Oil level is still full.
Any ideas?

Thanks

SeaFoam won't do much for a ticking sound, if you want to try anything go for a good engine flush.

Default Will try the engine flush this weekend

I hate to say it but I put the ole stethescope up to the head today and the noise is really strong on the front passenger side cylinder head.

There comes a time in every Disco II owners life when he is pretty sure it is time for the dreaded valve job.

I am going to try an engine flush this weekend on DiscoMikes advice.

We'll see if that works.

Oh well, while I am doing the valve job I might as well do a lift, a tjm winch bumper, new tires, rock sliders, snorkel, roof rack, etc., etc.
It's only practical.

Thanks for all the help, I'll post on the progress after the engine flush.

Question: If it is valves, do you think it is better to order a new head or just get the one I have machined?

Has anyone here done this valve job on a DII?
Thanks
Ryan

Get the old one re-done, get the valve guides Rheamed, and I would install new valves! Just b/c. I have to do it soon!

I try to do the engine crankcase oil flush once a year with all the driving and off road driving I do, also with cold winters, and me having to start and go some times, can only contribute to engine sludge. Cold engines operating causes engine sludge and shit. Especially during the winter and oil change intervals are not consistant.

I also read somewhere on here that some, maybe all of the push rodded Rover V8's are notorious for high engine wear if oil changes are not kept to manufacture's spec? I would think this would be for every kind of gas engine.

I have the same ticking sound. To me it sounds like a clock ticking faster and faster then stops and then starts again. I talked to Disco Mike about this sound some time ago. He said it might be the stepper motor. Well I took my truck in for the 37,500K inspection. I told Land Rover I wanted to get a new stepper motor. They told me it was a normal sound and it might be coming from a PVC valve. I think they did not want to give me a new part. Land Rover here in Hawaii are a bunch of cheap a-holes. As for my Eng. I pamper the hell out of it In fact my engine runs so smooth you an not feel it

I have a tick. Different for the tap at startup. I was told it was my belts. I'll wait and see after the 60k service. Got about 50,800 on the disco now.
